About this deal

about heart damage, but I feel like they didn’t make much of an effort in Beth’s case because narratively, her time was up. The novel has two sequels: Little Men: Life at Plumfield with Jo’s Boys (1871) and Jo’s Boys and How They Turned Out (1886). And it has two great, unavoidable climaxes that have been provoking a strong reaction in readers since the second volume (where it all goes down) was published in 1869. What a tribute to Alcott’s characters, that 150 years later we can still be arguing and debating over what would have been best for them!

The sequels, Little Men and particularly Jo’s Boys (I’ll get to those in a later review) have a bit more of a social conscience than Little Women, but it’s addressed much more towards the early stirrings of feminism than towards racial issues. It was the complete story (originally published in two volumes as Little Women and Good Wives), but it was trimmed all round, shorter and tighter. Alcott was the daughter of the famous transcendentalist Bronson Alcott and was friend of Emerson and Thoreau. Love, loyalty and the bond between sisters are explored and celebrated in Dodie Smith’s enduring classic. She’s trying to move beyond the little columns and stories she’s been writing for the periodicals, and she’s even working on a novel.

Paper, pencils, school books from the 1800s, and books mentioned in the story were also on Eastland’s punch list. The life of these 19th century people was filled with the important things in life—their families, their memories of childhood.Rebecca Green is a hugely talented multi-disciplinary American illustrator whose work has featured in books, magazines and on posters, as well as in community projects and exhibitions.

A little lifting to the intricate laser-cut dust-jacket design at a couple of places, no tears to jacket, book itself bright and unmarked with immaculate pink edging to pages. My original fear that the four March sisters would be too many to keep straight was, of course, ridiculous. But I felt that if there was any passion at all in their relationship, Alcott never indicated so to any believable degree. I’ve always loved Little Women and have always had a niggling itch for Jo and Laurie to be together. Turning off the personalized advertising setting won’t stop you from seeing Etsy ads, but it may make the ads you see less relevant or more repetitive. Slight lean to bindings, cloth rubbed and worn and with blistering to the first volume, old ownership markings to front matter, pages tanned and thumbed, occasionally age-stained, browned and offset from leaves formerly laid in. From a twenty-first century perspective, it’s obvious Beth suffers from severe social anxiety, and it says something about mental illness in the 19th century that the solution was not seen to be “find a way to fix Beth” but “find a way to adjust Beth’s environment so she won’t have to be placed in situations that make her anxious.
