About this deal

Are money and protocol guiding the case toward its easiest conclusion, or is Lauren seeing things that aren’t there? It’s a fun, easy read that kept me intrigued throughout, but the characterisation and conclusion left a lot to be desired. If there is a sequel to this book, I hope it addresses the neglect and abuse that these kids suffer from. A bit of grit always appeals to me in novels- I like to know that the author won’t shy away from anything difficult, and Golding proves herself right away with ripped stitches and an invasive fix made by a doctor who says “tell me to stop if it hurts too much,” and then doesn’t. Girls keeping their families going, girls trying to get away… Jacqueline Wilson’s written about them all!

Once she leaves hospital, her fears don’t dissipate and things really ramp up when her babies are abducted.Because of this, however, I found it not quite as compelling as it could have been and it often seemed as though there was something missing. However, I can only say very little about Little Darlings because too much backstory about folklore might 1) cause your eyelids to droop, 2) make you think I’m a little batty (you wouldn’t be entirely wrong), and 3) most importantly, give entirely too much away. When the two girls meet in unlikely circumstances, they are surprised to find in each other something they've been missing all their lives. Sunset, dcéra (bývalého) rockera Dannyho Kilmana ktorého nezaujíma NIČ iné ako stratená sláva a popularita a Suzy, (bývalej) modelky, ktorá by ju najradšej vymenila. Golding keeps the plot tightly focused through the novel's small cast and what I initially wrote off as shallow characterisation turns out to be information carefully and deliberately withheld, with just enough drip-fed that you'll suspect every character of being the villain of the piece.

The book's ending was noted for its ambiguity, which left it unclear whether the events portrayed were caused by supernatural interference or Lauren's psychosis. This sounds like something I WOULD read — I love this kind of stuff — the horror/folkore genres blending. Summary: A carefully-crafted and uncannily clever tale about a new mother's irrational (or perhaps not so irrational) panic for the safety of her two children. She’s an only child with a sickly but devoted mum who constantly tells her she’s the daughter of a famous Rockstar. Destiny, on the other hand, is an only child living on a rundown estate with a sickly but devoted mum who constantly tells her that she’s really the daughter of a famous rock star .

If Little Darlings didn't satisfy your appetite for scares, and you're in the mood to constantly be on the edge of your seat, Brenda Novak's Evelyn Talbot series - starting with Her Darkest Nightmare - is an excellent read. Lauren is convinced that she wasn’t dreaming, and slowly but surely she enters a nightmare world where she tries to impress on those around her that her children are in danger, but no-one believes her, not even her husband Patrick. Little Darlings is her first novel, and has been optioned for screen by Free Range Films, the team behind the adaptation of My Cousin Rachel. There are some unsettling interactions between new mother Lauren and a creepy woman who threatens to swap Lauren’s twin babies with her own.
