About this deal

This drive was also a victim of many component swapping, since the flash has changed many times over time, and also it's controller, that in some revisions came with Silicon Motion SM2258XT or even 59XT. Read speeds also take a significant hit when real data is written to the drive, falling to 300-350MB/s.

Testing with CrystalDiskMark seems to show read performance a little slower than what SATA3 is capable of, although the random 4k access performance does not seem too bad. In general, this is not good news, but when it comes to the cost-sensitive segment of the market where the demands placed on the device are rather limited, this can be an acceptable trade-off. Rugged - A400 is shock- and vibration-resistant for rugged reliability when used in notebooks and other mobile computing devices. Please allow 2 working days for a response as some item's enquiries with international suppliers may be required. Also more reliable and durable than a hard drive, A400 is available in multiple capacities from 120GB-480GB.

Please note that this SSD is sold in multiple variants with different NAND flash or controller, which could affect performance, the "Notes" section at the end of this page has more info.

Designed for ultimate reliability, these SSDs have an excellent 1 million hour mean time before failure (MTBF) and a 3 Year Limited Manufacturer's Warranty. With a generous 960GB capacity, the A400 SSD provides ample storage for your files, applications, and games. This SmartCacheFlush technology allows incoming data to only have a “pit stop” in the cache and then move to the NAND flash at once. This cutting-edge solid-state drive is designed to revolutionize your computing experience, offering a perfect blend of speed, reliability, and ample storage capacity. Many of the SMART attributes are unknown and vendor-specific, with 0xE7 appearing to be the media wear-out indicator while 0xAA seems to indicate pre-failure state and may be an indication of accumulated bad blocks at a guess. Because of the drive’s reputation, I did not opt to break the warranty seal and take the unit apart, but apparently they do come with Phison or Silicon Motion controllers. The results from Anvil’s Storage Utilities confirms the drive to be a very average SATA SSD, although again, these tests only use a limited amount of the capacity, thus hiding the nasty behaviour of the SSD once it fills up.

Invest in the Kingston A400 SSD for a reliable and efficient storage solution that enhances your computing experience. Invest in the future of storage technology and take your system to the next level with Kingston's trusted and high-performance A400 SSD. A400 is available in multiple capacities from 120GB–960GB to give you all the space you need for applications, videos, photos and other important documents. Credit subject to status, UK residents only, Box Limited acts as a broker and offers finance from PayPal Credit. The 960GB capacity suggests that the drive reserves a bit of its capacity as a cache to boost performance, as it is a DRAM-less drive, as most “low-end” units are.

PS3 has SATA 1, 1TB limit and no TRIM so absolutely go for the most cheapest option and these 960GB models are it. Which sadly means, the drive is slow … just as some people have claimed … but it’s also not bad at turning out decent figures on benchmarks so it’s a case of not just trusting synthetic benchmarks to tell the whole story. In the meantime, I’ll see if I have time to give some of those tools a whirl – at the moment, I’m collecting some experimental data to the drive, so I’m going to have to wait until I can afford some data destruction. This makes the drive a very poor choice if you intend to fill it up and this kind of behaviour is likely the cause of poor performance reported by users.

Say goodbye to frustratingly slow boot times and application launches – the A400 SSD accelerates these processes, making your computer more responsive and efficient. This is a very un-SSD-like result that could easily be bested by many hard drives and even USB 2.Note well though , this is a BIG drive - about 14 hrs to low-level format in NTFS via USB 2 , not really a problem but an overnight job! The rear clarifies that the performance claim is based on PCMark 8 Bandwidth Test, and contains a number of product warranty related messages.
