About this deal

Jilly Cooper's wit and wicked way with words is still sparkling, but I suspect the PC world we currently live in has softened her more outrageous and naughty stretches of humour and raunchiness. Jilly recaptures her magic with the old favourites, Rupert and Taggie, and bringing in lots of new characters who very quickly feel like family.

She reminds us that beneath the surface people, famous or otherwise, are often hiding an emotional or physical pain that is not always visible or understood. There’s still something infectiously joyful and funny about her particular brand of very English writing: it comes with a kindliness and a silliness that is beginning to feel to me quite painfully nostalgic. In this book, they lack dimension or depth, which makes it hard to keep up with what’s going on, and even harder to care.As Searston’s new owner, he won’t stand for anything less than victory in the Premier League, despite the odds being stacked against him. from its raunchy cover and title, to the wonderful characters, the brilliant one liners and exciting plot. It was raunchy, funny, sexy, and clever, all the things I love about Jilly Cooper’s novels, and I sincerely hope she has one more novel in her.

For five decades, she has produced gripping stories with exciting multi-layered plots and characters worth investing in. As Searston's new owner, he won't stand for anything less than victory in the Premier League, despite the odds being stacked against him.To use words Cooper would doubtless scorn at as PC abominations (she has said she misses wolf whistling and that modern men are “always crying” and “growing beards”), many of her heroes and plots are 'problematic' and possibly 'triggering' for today’s audiences. I could almost imagine that possibly her ideas were in the book, but written by someone else to assist at some points.

It’s true that Cooper has always championed women’s desire – no one has a better time in bed than her heroines. has its usual plethora of dastardly devils and bullying bastards, but in Cooper’s world she usually ensures they ultimately lose out to the devoted and darling ones, with kindness and empathy. And yet Cooper, who is 86, has sold 11 million books in the UK alone (perhaps her most notable fan is Rishi Sunak). Jilly is now well into her 80’s and has adapted her books to ensure they are relevant without compromising her signature style. Rugby seems a little more Rutshire’s style than football, but I actually love football more, and I have also enjoyed Cooper’s previous novels, so that was an absolutely perfect fit for me!Personally, I found sex, even after the best efforts of her editor, to be a bit thin on the ground in Tackle! The other missing ingredient was that there is very little 'steaminess' in this one - an essential component in her previous books. e Jilly’s facebook page, goodreads and other reader social media pages to see if anyone knew when this book would be released, I was so excited when I first saw that Jilly was writing another book - it took years, Jilly’s acknowledgements at the end of the book confirm covid was to blame for a large portion of the delay in releasing. sees Cooper’s beloved hero Rupert Campbell-Black take to the football field as he becomes chairman of a local club and sets about masterminding their rise to the top of the Premier League,” the synopsis reads.
