About this deal

Make allowance for more growth from spring- and summer-planted containers compared to autumn or winter plantings. The bold, palmate foliage is semi evergreen – it can sometimes be susceptible to leaf spot, a fungal disease, but simply cut the affected leaves right back (don’t put them on your compost). Garden Plants for Scotland by Kenneth Cox and Raoul Curtis-Machin (Frances Lincoln) is a new resource book for gardeners in exposed areas and is packed with advice on plants for Scottish conditions. Sadly with all the new regulations surrounding export to European Union destinations, we are unable to deliver to the European Union or Northern Ireland. Rugged roses such as Rosa Swany provide colourful blossoms even in the most inhospitable conditions, whilst the berried Sorbus Aucuparia or weeping Kilmarnock Willow provide other interesting features.

He lives with his family in Fife and is also gardening correspondent for The Herald magazine, and a part-time lecturer in garden design. But the climate varies considerably - from the colder, wetter, windier mountainous areas to the west coast where tender plants can be grown outdoors all year round - and choosing plants that are suited to the local conditions is critical to success. Born in Scotland, Raoul Curtis-Machin developed a passionate interest in gardening from the age of thirteen. For the modern gardener, looking with a fresh eye, many of the native species provide a rich source of inspiration for natural and historic planting schemes as well as modern design, or simply to blend with more conventional garden plants and preserve overlooked species.Anti-inflammatory leaves for minor wounds, flowers for salads and a mild sedative tisane when plentiful. The standard gardening books, excellent though many of them are, have a major failing as far as gardening in Scotland is concerned. Its properties have been known for centuries, but it is only recently that companies have started to use bog myrtle extract in commercial midge repellents. When all the gardening world is focused on plants for drought, it's good to find a book for those who garden in the cold and wetter parts of the north.

At Glasgow’s Holmwood, visitors can discover 5 acres of landscaped gardens and a small kitchen garden, planted with a range of Victorian herbs, fruit and vegetables. Healthy soil is one that is full of bacteria, fungi, microbes and other creatures which creates the right environmental conditions for the plants and animals to thrive. Common Gorse, known as Whin or Furze in Scotland, is extremely widespread, particularly in sandy, coastal soils and thin, upland soils. You can also ensure that your garden has a mixture of native plant species, with plenty of sheltered areas for birds to seek refuge.

Amongst the many plants we grow are our highly praised autumn Gentians bred here by Dr Ian McNaughton, and probably the largest range of Meconopsis cultivars found anywhere.
