or deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature, but it's enjoyable ,and engrossing all the same. Dewar plays an important role in Nixon's illegal surveillance and espionage tactics, culminating in the 1972 burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex. Lili Franck, Rebecca and Walli's youngest sister who protests the Communist government of East Germany by singing subversive songs. It teaches readers about the Cold War era through its gripping storytelling and vivid character development. Edge of Eternity is a historical and family saga novel by Welsh-born author Ken Follett, published in 2014.

In 1989, Ken’s epic novel about the building of a medieval cathedral, The Pillars of the Earth, was published. Hans had a new tweed jacket: he managed to find good clothes even though East Germany was a fashion desert. Who were the good guys and the bad guys, which are clearer in retrospect than they were in real time.Walli Franck, Rebecca's musical younger brother who escapes East Germany to become an international rock star.

Edit: I would also like to add another glaring omission from a book that tried to hit all the big moments of the 60's-80's. Welsh author Ken Follett's historical novel Edge of Eternity (2014), the third and final book in his Century Trilogy, follows a generation of families as they grapple with the Cold War and other historic events of the second half of the twentieth century.Rebecca stared hard at Hans, watching for his reaction to her surmise, hoping he would laugh it off and immediately come out with the true, innocent explanation. None such for the Gipper, but I think part of that is that the story starts to go off the rails a bit in the 80's. On its own or read in sequence with Fall of Giants and Winter of the World, this is an irresistible and spellbinding epic about the fight for personal freedom set during the Cold War.

Ken Follett is one of the world's best-loved authors, selling more than 188 million copies of his thirty-six books. More importantly, I'd say the book suffers because the history is nowhere near as interesting as the first and second world wars. In the earlier books, Follett's strength was his human characters, and the terrible situations they're thrown in. Along with the Bill Hodges trilogy by Stephen King and the Empire Trilogy by Raymond Feist and Janny Wurts. This is both a good thing, in that Follett acknowledges that the family did indeed grow weaker in that time period, and a bad thing as most of the characters are terrible people. As Bernd detailed the emergency arrangements, Rebecca wondered when the school would get its new head. At first he had the baffled frown of one who sees a familiar sight in an alien context, such as a turnip in a library. In doing so, Follett covers almost all of the major historical events between 1961 and 2008, the termination of the novel. Very little mention is made of Ted, the fat drunk Kennedy, I guess Follett couldn't quite whitewash him into a completely flattering light.

I think Follett missed the space race in his portrayal of US/USSR relations, but including it would have pushed the book well over the 1,098 pages. Reviewers said there is no problem reading it without having read the other two first, which I have found to be the case.He turned to speak to Rebecca, but the elevator doors closed and she pressed the button for the ground floor.
