About this deal

His slim, youthful, deceptively innocent appearance was out of step for a veteran of the crusty, backstabbing ranks of the Mexican federales.

At night, sunburnt and thirsty, the spring breakers drive down from South Padre Island to invade Matamoros, where the beers are cheap and the drinking age negotiable. Pages can include limited notes and highlighting, and the copy can include previous owner inscriptions.Sadly, 15 victims were found buried near the shed where the rituals occurred, one of whom was American student Mark Kilroy.

the book covers the early life and up bringing of the cult leader and how he rose to power using magic, and eventually capturing the young blonde spring breaker who was partying in mexico, tortured and killed him along with many many others. From bestselling, Pulitzer Prize winning author Edward Humes comes a dramatic story of faith, science, and courage unlike any since the famous Scopes Monkey Trial. He was a study in contradictions: profoundly superstitious yet well educated, savvy without being corrupt. And now, as if Benitez's plate were not full enough, the notorious Hernandez family was up to something.

In writing this book, I had access to the investigators who made the case, and to Leasure himself as he sat in jail and handicapped his own trial day after day.

There's only so many times a normal person can read such scenes without wanting to put the book down. This title is hard to find, but well worth the time and money if you have a curiosity about Santeria and Afro-Carribean religions. Here are the stories of some of these men and women, how their lives changed because of the bill and how this country changed because of them. This unflinching, unforgettable story is brought to vivid, terrifying life in "one of the best true-crime tales in recent time" ( Publishers Weekly). Between these small towns, fields of sorghum, cotton, and corn quilt the flatlands abutting the road.

As the net closes in, the corruption of the Mexican police, the double-dealing of Constanzo’s own world, and the terrifying demands of Palo Mayombe leave over 60 dead and usher in a new era of crime. Humes doesn’t go into graphic detail during the sacrifice sequences, but he does clearly state what happens. Humes did a good job of showing the decline of some of the cult members from normal to crazy (like Sara and Omar), to the downward spiral of the criminally insane to the psychopathic (like Adolfo and Duby). The book concerns the Matamoros cult of Adolfo de Jesus Constanzo, the mechanics of how it came to be, and the inevitable end of the participants. There's a lot of background on each of his followers, the culture and people of Matamoras, and the Santeria and Palo Mayombe religions.
