About this deal

Battle Royale has been licensed and released on home video multiple times by UK distributor Arrow Video. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. When you know a story and its characters that well, you start seeking the screen for trivialities and background curiosities. namely, young fresh-faced children hacking each other to bits:) Of course, the idea that the government has locked exploding collars around their tender necks is a horrific bonus! It’s a great soundtrack, and an excellent addition to the collection, although the end theme by Dragon Ash is notable by its absence.

The emotions I experienced then–an irrational hatred for the unseen forces that drove us into those circumstances, a poisonous hostility towards adults, and a gentle sentimentality for my friends–were a starting point for everything since. You might think that Revenge would help, after all with another 20 minutes of footage, that would offer 20 minutes of character development and background in a film where the cast drop like flies in the first hour. And the film’s ending is extended, featuring three flashback “Requiems” that serve as a final grace note for story points we’ve seen earlier. Try as I might, I couldn’t find a track listing in the booklet or the packaging, but the Internet is your friend if you want to know what is what.

I do feel that its strongest impact is with audiences closer to the age of its protagonists, but it is still a watchable piece of entertainment. org, one of the premier destinations on the web to discuss DVD releases from The Criterion Collection, Masters of Cinema, and other DVD production companies from around the world. Teacher Kitano’s class is a prime example of disruptive youth, and when he is stabbed by one of his students, he quits. The rules are straightforward; each student gets a kit bag of equipment to complement anything he or she may already have, as well as one random weapon. I laugh every time when he claps along with the chipper TV instructor as she tells the students how best to knock each other off.

She ends up transferred to a school full of delinquents and is the only one unsurprised when a school coach trip ends up at military compound. When Class B of Zentsuji Middle School are chosen to take part in the massacre, the different students quickly take sides against each other, but Shuya (Tatsuya Fujiwara) and Noriko (Aki Maeda) form an alliance in an attempt to survive the experience together. The fifth disc in the set is also a soundtrack CD, so one can pretend that they're being hunted by their classmates if one listen to it whilst out for a run. It’s like night and day when compared to the previous Blu-ray release, which looked more like a DVD upscale.

Also included in the set is the incendiary sequel Battle Royale II, the directing debut of Kenta Fukasaku (after his father passed away during production), in which a new class of delinquents are recruited by the government to hunt down the survivor of the deadly games of the first film.
