About this deal

I’ve used a variety of camping chairs, stools, and inflatable pads for backcountry sitting for many years including when camping, hunting, and day trips. In the most upright position, resting the arms on the straps just isn’t comfortable as the thin edge of each strap is abrasive. I’ll be interested to see how it goes when I introduce it to the rocky hillsides and long sits of an autumn hunting season. However, the angle of the chair’s legs makes a more reclined or slouched seat versus an upright one. It's the last corner pocket that causes the problem, I put the opposite leg on the ground and gingerly applied pressure on the last leg to get it into the pocket.

Unfortunately, the shallow, tilted hammock almost forces the user into a slumped posture that is not very comfortable. Some go for minimizing weight, some go for comfort, some go for looks, some go for easy setup, some go for using sustainable materials, you get the picture. As such, hips have ample room to spread, and arms can move freely, versus feeling pinned next to one’s sides. The seat has a slightly lower back than some others that I’ve used, but the back adjusts from fully upright to slightly reclined, which does add to comfort given how I want to sit.

It is one of the heavier models we tested, but with that weight comes more of the comfort and stability one expects to find in a “real” chair. The stool simply pulls out into it's square format and can be securely positioned on the ground to give as much stability as possible. The angles of the base poles create a more upright sitting position than that of the Monarch or REI’s Flexlite Air, and the relatively taut ripstop polyester fabric cradles the back versus stretching like nylon. Our comparably heavy friend TJ, as mentioned, also put many evenings on his Chair Zero with no issues before he upgraded to the Moonlite—strictly for comfort. The extra flex that the mesh seat offers allows it to stretch in the reclined position, but in the most upright position, it causes enough of a sink that the back of the thighs rest on the front legs of the chair. That said, I've no idea how effective the Helinox Ground Sheet is and Chair Zero plus ground sheet is close to the weight of the Ground Chair. Short sides alleviate the weird arm placement issue and allow for wider hips to extend over the edge of the seat.

I rate their products as they are durable, practical and have been designed to last in rain, sleet, snow, wind and the cold (all of which you can experience in one day on the hills of Scotland! The reclinability of the chair comes from the adjustable toggles and straps that allow the user to either cinch them so the chair sits more upright or relax them, so the chair reclines a bit. I’m not sure if the reason for this design is for space savings or stability or for some other reason, but I have to think it must be there for some reason, otherwise why annoy users when tearing down the chair in the dark and thinking that the legs are stuck while pulling and pulling at it. I think NEMO takes a swing at all the major categories with the Moonlite and for the most part, hits on just about all accounts. The Big Agnes and Nemo are the most comfortable, in spades, but it’s hard to beat the Chair Zero at nearly half the weight, with proven durability and decent comfort factor. Instead of the usual reinforced sleeve for the frame’s arms to slide into, NEMO has gone with “Y-molded ball-and-socket connectors” which snap into place. The main support tubes directly under the seat are also slightly oval-shaped, instead of the normal round shape, which I guess was determined by some product engineer to be stronger. It's easy to put together and we love the fact that it can all be packed back down into a portable carry sack.

Very comfortable- I am 6ft 2 and makes all the difference cooking or sitting by fire after hikes or canoe tours. These chairs are light enough to carry in a back pack and comfortable enough to enjoy your surroundings after a long day of walking. From a performance point of view, we were really impressed at how comfortable the Ultra Lite Chair was, even for our taller testers who may have had to get down lower to the ground than others, but still found the deep seat could accommodate their weight well. They are, however, extremely well constructed with robust fabrics and a really solid base on both the stool and the chair so they will last. Nemo’s Moonlite Reclining Chair takes lightweight camping gear to a new level of extravagance with this unique design.

The rounded rubber feet on the back legs work in conjunction with the articulating joints, aka knees, of the front legs to make the Monarch the only proper rocking chair in the group. That hasn’t happened to any of us, but this chair lacks the nested sort of feel that the Monarch provides, and it feels like you need to anchor your feet against the ground a bit to stay on board.
