O’Brien teaches the concepts of true heroism, of doing brave things when you are terrified, of sacrificing oneself for others. And the slowness of the story was accented by the slowness of the audiobook narrator and very long pauses. Then, having had the book lying around our flat recently, my dad picked it up one visit and started reading . I was so into this book, I made my mom take me to the library where I checked it out so I could read ahead to find out what was coming. It might be because of Don Bluth's genius; but I also didn't like the illustrations in the book (all mice and rats look exactly the same) and I didn't think the author did such a great job imagining how a rat would think and act in this particular situation.

In my review, I compared the book and the movie and concluded that although they were quite different, I loved them both. We also have the occasional misfortune of horse-flies in the summertime and the rare autumn visit of a mouse who makes it past the notice of our savage (and somehow still fabulous) cat. A impressive imaginative narrative that supports theory of mind development (my 10 year old is on the autistic spectrum), and poses questions on morality and civilization. Additionally, the Frisby family name was changed to "Brisby" to avoid trademark infringement with the Frisbee.

Justin and Nicodemus make reference to "the wives," who are certainly shown as capable and industrious, but don't really have a part to play in the book. A culture of fear began to grow surrounding unethical medical and scientific practices, which are heavily reflected in the book. Oh my, you cannot know how profound, enlightening, and intellectual the discourse is, until you read it for yourself!

O"Brien was an american author, as the story had to me a completely english feel - either way its extremely well-written in both structure and language. A solid story with exciting twists and turns that means my 6 year old kept pestering me to continue reading.

And there's an interesting snippet at the back as to how the seeds of the story were planted in the author's mind. Frisby, a widowed mouse with four small children, must move her family to their summer quarters immediately, or face almost certain death. After Mrs Frisby saves a young crow from being attacked by the farm cat, and he hears her problem, he suggests that she ask for wisdom from the wise Owl, who suggests she ask for help from the Rats.In 2015, MGM, which had released the 1982 film, acquired the rights to the book to adapt it into a live-action/animated film.
