About this deal

When I had conquered my laughter I placated them, agreeing that the prophet's request was indeed God's answer to our prayers. to all who know her; her good neighbour Paine has sent at his own expense to Stalybridge for Doctor Green, thinking he may be able to make her more comfortable than our own humble apothecary Failsworth. One of them is a socialist looking to reform the world and the other comes to the household more animal than human.

This was a very interesting read about Preacher Wroe and how he may have caused his own downfall when living in Ashton-under-Lyne, in the early 19th century.I felt no fear, for I knew myself chosen — I knew, from the arrow of certainty that pierced my heart as the Prophet spoke. Through Hannah I also got to take part in the early times of workers unions and socialism, which I found very interesting, and through her intellectual relationship with Wroe, his view on religion gave me something to think about. Jane has taught writing to a wide variety of students, and is Professor Emerita at Sheffield Hallam University.

I remember watching a television adaptation of this book some years ago, with the excellent Jonathan Pryce and a stunning performance from Kathy Burke. There is a rich vein of comedy in this beautifully written book which deals so profoundly with the attractions of idealism and the confusion between sexual and religious feeling. It’s an interesting premise, based around the real-life figure of John Wroe, a charismatic self-proclaimed prophet and leader of a religious sect known as the Christian Israelite Church which he established in the north of England in the 1830s. The way the book is structured into four different narratives allows the women’s characters to develop fully, as over nine months, the story of their lives unfold.Boyle and the author Jane Rogers, who adapted her novel for the series, have given powerful visual life to a richly imagined world. His faith strong and devout, Wroe began to travel the world spreading the word of what was now known as the Christian Israelite church (it's likely Wroe himself coined the name) and attempting to gather together the scattered tribes of Israel and reconcile the Jewish and Catholic churches. Due to this as you reach a new chapter being retold by a different character there is a lack of cohesion not only to chapters as told by other characters but also from previous chapters by that character.
