About this deal

mschira - Tuesday, October 15, 2013 - link Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think there is a proper clamshell device running RT. Using an MediaTek processor, the HP 11 Chromebook is able to quickly launch apps, browse online while efficiently saving battery power.

Inside the HP Chromebook 11 is what is essentially the "bare bones" package, which consists of a dual-core Intel Celeron N3060 mobile CPU made for tablets, 4GB LPDDR3-1600 SDRAM, and 16GB of eMMC storage. You can even charge your laptop from another laptop, if you’re into that — anything but HP’s included cable takes a long time to charge the Chromebook’s large battery, but it does work. Bass tones were richer with music and I didn’t need to turn the volume up as high to escape the far-away listening experience I noticed when I did not tune in with headphones. Like last year’s model, it’s not the fastest computer ever, nor the best-designed, nor the most capable.

It’s a frustrating change from the smooth, responsive Chromebook Pixel, which got all this right — and had a touchscreen too, just in case.Because of the battery life, and because of the option of running Linux on it with Chrome OS - for which the 4GB RAM and the Smartcard slot for more Flash memory. Modern systems have at most only a single mechanical part (the hard drive) and failure rates of the main electrical components (processor, memory and motherboard) are incredibly low. The Acer Chromebook 11 has a battery capacity of up to 12 hours, while HP guarantees up to an additional 30 minutes of battery life. Plus you get all of the benefits of Chrome: sandboxing, security and an always up-to-date/lightweight platform. There's no way to build WinRT with support for legacy apps because that would defeat the entire point of it.

It used to be that you’d have to spend tons of money to get a notebook with a good keyboard, Google seems devoted to fixing that. On a separate day, I logged 10 full hours of continuous YouTube video streaming before the battery died. The only time I can’t get online now is underground on the subway — and even that may not be true for long. If Microsoft didn't build Windows RT the right way, to take advantage of legacy apps, I'm glad at least Chrome OS is ramping up competition for Intel in notebooks. It’s sticky and plastic, and doesn’t allow your finger to glide smoothly at all; my fingers jittered around as I tried to move the cursor, and the screen jittered even worse as I tried to scroll with two fingers or pinch to zoom on the screen. Some programs don’t run on ARM, so you can’t run Minecraft and other closed-source applications that haven’t been compiled for ARM Linux. I'm glad of the competition, but I don't see why WinRT's lack of legacy app support is a deal breaker that pushes you to another platform. The picture was very fuzzy with my chat recipient, who also could barely hear me, even when I inched closer to the microphone, located to the right of the camera.
