About this deal

Among his best-loved books is Babe, The Sheep Pig, which became a major film and was nominated for an Academy Award.

You can't help but grow to love the main character, Max and you end up rooting for him to eventually cross the road.Max is a hedgehog who lives with his family in a nice little home, but it’s on the wrong side of the road from the Park where there’s a beautiful lily pond and plenty of juicy slugs, worms and snails! It talks about all the do’s and don’ts while crossing the road, and also different types of aiders like lollipop man, traffic lights or zebra crossing. The 35th anniversary of The Hodgeheg – a timeless classic tale for young children from the master of animal stories, Dick King-Smith. The included slideshow presentation for the teaching input will show them two paragraphs, both containing the same facts but with one being more detailed than the other.

The Hodgeheg tells the story of Max, a hedgehog who bumps his head after an attempt to cross the road. He attempts to cross the road here but finds it difficult to avoid the people coming from the opposite direction and only just makes it to the other side. The next day, Max observes how the lollipop lady stops all of the traffic twice a day and allows the children to cross. Max is a hedgehog who lives with his family in a nice little home, but it’s on the wrong side of the road from the park where there’s a beautiful lily pond and plenty of juicy slugs, worms, and snails! However poor Max sustains a bump to the head during one of his expeditions resulting in his muddled speech.

There are not many pictures in the book, but the text engages the reader and is simplistic enough that younger children in Key Stage 1 would enjoy it if it was being read aloud to them. Max's story will provide an entertaining and heartwarming story to read to young children or for confident young readers to read to themselves. The use of illustrative vocabulary throughout the book can be used to develop children's own vocabulary in retelling the story and describing how the characters are feeling.

The children found it particularly enjoyable when Max was getting his words jumbled up and they had to figure out what he was saying. The Hodgeheg first published in 1987 is still a children's story that is regularly used and read by children both in and outside the classroom.

Children will then independently find information in extracts of the story and record what they have learnt about hedgehogs. His first attempt ends in a nasty bump on the head, and Max finds when he tries to speak his words are all mixed up. I quite like the Hodgeheg because Max kept trying cross the road but it wasn't the best place to cross if you were a hedgehog so Max tried to find a way. I liked this book because it has a very curious hedgehog who wants to stop cars from running over hedgehogs.I was surprised when I discovered tHat I didn't remember all that much about the story, but I thought that added to my enjoyment.
