About this deal

My favourite thing about this book is that whilst it is marketed as adult fiction and was perfectly suitable for 20 year old me, my 17 year old brother (who normally has an aversion to reading) sat down with it for 45 minutes flickering through and having conversations with me about how certain elements matched his computer games or things he’d seen on tv and we really enjoyed flipping through the book together because of this vibrant, sectioned format. The book begins with providing definitions for the terminology that is used in the book such as what a ghost is, the meanings of myths and legends. As someone with an interest in this subject, I could follow it fine but I don't know how a new to subject reader would fare. An Illustrated History of Ghosts is a non-fiction read that is packed full of much information that is presented in bite sized chunks. It's the first time I've seen explanations from different cultures and belief systems in such depth, usually you only hear of the traditional western (often religious) and maybe some Japanese myths and traditions, both make up the majority of horror media we see today.

Like Adam Allsuch Boardman’s earlier work with Nobrow Press, An Illustrated History of UFOs, An Illustrated History of Ghosts is a stylishly produced, colorful piece of graphic art that provides a basic but thorough introduction to ghostly myths and legends throughout the world. tied together with some really incredible illustrations that bring this book together really beautifully (I would say brought to life but. Instead, Ghosts feels much more targeted towards much younger readers and offers a very high-level overview of a broad variety of things pertinent to ghosts, but never really leverages the spooky subject matter or the unique advantages of illustration to offer something more tangible.I would have loved to read something like this when I was younger and in my first moment of awe and insistence of watching ghost hunting videos and shows and adamant that ghosts and spirits are real. Starting in pre-modernity and covering history up to the present day, the book gives information about ghosts in different forms and cultures, hauntings and ghosts in popular culture. I would have loved to see the graphic novel go a bit or in-depth with some of the writing and details but without it just makes it an excellent starting guide and introduction to ghosts and ghost hunting.

The artwork is by far and away the biggest asset to this book, it straddled the line between infographic and illustrative style in just the right way, and every page was full of fun characters and objects to make this a really visually engaging read. A bump in the night, the crack of floorboards and the uneasy coldness of a room…Signs we might attribute to a ghostly presence. It is not really a book for somebody who has a deep knowledge on the topic already, more of a general overview, but it is still, in my opinion, worth picking up, especially for Halloween time. Following his degree, Adam served a year as the Students' Union President whilst simultaneously working as a freelance illustrator.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book, especially for anyone who wants to learn a bit more about the history behind ghosts, especially from different backgrounds and cultures. kind of reminded me of a grown up horrible histories style of book, the illustration style is fairly similar! The pre-loved books are carefully cleaned and maintained offering a wide variety of general and specialist titles from children's to adults. Whether you are a ghost fanatic or simply piqued by curiosity, you’ll get a robust deep dive into the experiences of paranormal occurrences, alternative explanations for these occurrences, and our culture’s fascination with them. They were so detailed and I could spend hours looking at the end papers and finding something new that I may have missed.

Whether you are a ghost fanatic or simply piqued by curiosity, you’ll get a robust deep dive into the experiences of paranormal occurrences, alternative explanations for these occurrences, and our culture’s fascination with them. His gorgeous graphic illustrations of which there are many, make his guide to the afterlife fun like no other. It reads a lot younger than I was expecting (especially as it is classed as Nonfiction (Adult) on Netgalley. The books is then split into chapters covering different centuries, highlighting the types of ghost that are linked to each century.Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. I understand it's a short book, but some of the things mentioned are glossed over to the point it really wasn't worth including them. The illustrations in this book are what really sells it though, they are so eye catching and perfect for the subject matter.

Veterans who know Boardman's work will likely really enjoy this as it's clearly a good quality output, just not to my taste. There were a few instances when really interesting details or myths were alluded to but the prose failed to go into more detail, or it was jammed into a list format that didn't help bring the subject matter to life for me. An Illustrated History of Ghosts provides a great overview of all things relating to ghosts from ghost catching, to haunted locations, to the pranksters themselves.

Get to the heart of the unexplainable in Adam’s third addition to the “llustrated History” series filled with private seances and ectoplasm to spiritual mediums and spirit photography galore.
