About this deal

His name was Parnell Perkins, and until shortly after midnight, he'd been a claims adjustor for California Fidelity. I mean, I thought I had the whodunit it figured out right away, but I kept trying to convince myself I was wrong. All too often, in books, movies, and TV, we see investigators focusing solely on one mystery at a time.

One might wonder why Nikki got only eight years for a premeditated murder, but this is never explained. Now she was hiring Kinsey to find out who really killed him – she knew she didn’t, but no-one had believed her when she was convicted. This is the book that introduced Kinsey Millhone and helped inaugurate a new era in crime fiction when female investigators like Millhone and Sara Paretsky's V.

Grafton had three children from previous marriages and several grandchildren, including a granddaughter named Kinsey. For the record, I'd like to say I'm a big fan of forgiveness as long as I'm given the opportunity to get even first. A tough-talking former cop, private investigator Kinsey Millhone has set up a modest detective agency in a quiet corner of Santa Teresa, California. As Kinsey delves deeper into the case, she uncovers a crucial piece of evidence that leads her to the real killer. Out of court, he had a reputation as a killer of another kind and the rumor was that he had mended many a broken heart in that difficult period between interlocutory and final decrees. This train will twist to include them all, with Kinsey following every turn until it finally twists back on itself and she fins herself face-to-face with a killer cunning enough to get away with murder. Millhone is a very believable character, a "what you see is what you get" kind of girl, lives simply and is far from perfect. I enjoyed Kinsey and the storyline was entertaining, especially when the action picked up throughout the second half of the book and I read it in one sitting. I. Warshawski, created by Sarah Paretsky, in Indemnity Only, also in 1982, private detectives in fiction were almost always male. While going through a "bitter divorce and custody battle that lasted six long years", Grafton imagined ways to kill or maim her ex-husband.
