That is, the Heechee ships were able to move at the speed of light and even faster, but one month of time passing on the ship meant one month of time passing on Gateway when, in reality, one month passing on the ship would mean many years of time passing on Gateway. I got to like all of them and wanted to see where they ended up and whether any of them blow up in space. A few, however, result in the discovery of new Heechee artifacts and habitable planets in other star systems, making the crews extremely wealthy. The economic side of living at Gateway is presented in detail, commencing with the contract all explorers must enter into with the Gateway Corporation, and including how some awards are determined.

Der eine Handlungsstrang, eine Psychoanalyse/Primärtherapie von Bob, spielt in der Zukunft des anderen, und nervt ein wenig zu Beginn, da die vielen Dialoge von Robbie mit dem Sigmund-Freud-Therapie-Hologramm, zu nichts zu führen scheinen und den Spannungsbogen des anderen, viel spannenderen Handlungsstranges, dauernd unterbrechen.
