About this deal

She maps the city from new vantage points, laying out a feminist intersectional approach to urban histories and proposes that the city is perhaps also our best hope for shaping a new urban future. And 'City of Protest' celebrates both the political power of cities, and the potential for protest, as well as the ways in which protest norms and behaviors can unintentionally include working-class women, mothers, and many others in how they're structured. Although the higher risk of violence comes from domestic and work environments, women tend to fear public space and constantly negotiate to apply strategies of self-surveillance. I also don't think the London/Canadian city focus was a negative for the book as it served to strengthen her arguments and she offered multiple references to other works by feminist geographers and particularly feminist geographers of colour. Granted, sanitation isn't India's strong suit by a long shot, but that only 8% of all public toilets in New Delhi–the national capital–cater to women is a glaring statistic if there ever was one.

During the 1970s and 1980s, particularly in North America, cooperative housing developments emerged as part of feminist city design initiatives. Leslie Kern's Feminist City is a fine book that doesn't need my 2 cents on it, but here it is anyway. However, Kern points out the city serves as a useful backdrop for important female friendships and serves as the center for many protests that have helped women have their voices heard. While recognising the concerns of Kern, the broader scope of this gender mainstreaming approach, I argue, has the potential to pave the way for a more inclusive urban space. As Kern argues, these initiatives have the potential to be amongst existing alternative visions as part of an urban feminist response to housing issues. And I choose to do so because of the lived example of Jesus, dignifying and empowering women despite the cultural norms of the time.

Under this intersectional approach, there are several conceptual debates that contribute to the urban feminist literature. The fear I felt when a man stared at me in the Tube and then took the seat next to me as soon as it opened up.

From the analysis of queer women’s spaces to racialised social movements, it adds scholarly value to the literature not only on urban feminist geography, but also urban planning and policy as well as the social sciences more broadly. In this regard, from being a mother to a ‘white gentrifier’, Kern successfully locates her own struggles, challenges and experiences in the city within urban feminist thinking. On the one hand, as Kern suggests, it is essential to recognise the diversity of issues when it comes to intersectional inequalities.Though it is contentious, I really enjoyed that it was largely based in anecdote, while still managing to make the theory and examples intersectional. Feminist visions of the city have been here all along…there are examples of both practices and ideals that are being lived right now, all along. As a result, as Kern mentions, queer women, trans and non-binary people attempt to seek alternative ways for establishing inclusive spaces as an essential part of their urban survival.
