I'm glad that I forced myself to go back to it, and glad that I persevered when even this second reading seemed to be going so slowly – two weeks to read less than 500 pages is very slow for me. Five hundred years later, the Book of Dave is discovered, where it becomes a sacred text of biblical proportions. If artificial intelligence as we currently understand it is distinct from human intelligence because it lacks self-awareness, then Dave makes us think again – what we know to be real and what we think is under our control are put into question in this genuinely unsettling and intelligently wrought novel. The linguistic creativity was definitely my favorite part of the book, followed by figuring out the obscure genesis of many of the words and phrases.
