Crackle Paste is a water-based product formulated with styrene-acrylic copolymer emulsions, and may have a tendency to yellow. Cracklé effect is coming out after 4-6 hours; if drying with hairdryer the Step 2 sets in 10 minutes. Golden Crackle Paste is a thick, opaque cracking material designed to develop deep fissure-like cracks as it cures. Its unique ratio of specific solids and binders allows for a “controlled failure” to occur and the result is its tendency to crack.Crackle Paste can be used alone to create a stable, cracked surface onto which paint can be applied. Therefore, applications onto rigid supports such as wooden panels, sheetrock (decorative/faux finish applications) or hardboard are recommended. Allows for full control of crackle results based on thickness of application and application technique. Increasing film thickness will increase the tendency to crack and also the size of the cracks and platelets. Its unique ratio of specific solids and binders allows for a "controlled failure" to occur and the result is its tendency to crack.

The size and extent of the crackle pattern is dependent on many factors, including the thickness of application, and the environmental conditions (temperature, relative humidity and air flow) during drying. Be sure to apply an even undercoat of glossy acrylic to the wood and let it dry, before applying the crackle paste.

For smaller cracks, apply a thin layer/coating of crackle to your surface and allow it to dry before any painting. The size and extent of the cracking pattern depends on the thickness of application and environmental conditions during drying. We suggest you first avoid adding water to your paint and minimize heat and air flow in your painting environment. The amount of cracks and sizes of them depends on a few different factors such as, the thickness of your application and conditions like temperature, humidity and air flow as it dries. The kit consists of two parts, either a white or black base (primer) and the XL Crackle paste for the top layer. The base/primer can be pigmented by adding acrylic paints, acrylic ink or resin pigments (no more than 20% addition by weight).In general, the Mont Marte crackle paste works better on larger areas because the paste has more surface area to shrink back to and ‘crackle’. Crackle Paste can be easily tinted with GOLDEN Heavy Body, Matte, High Load and Fluid Acrylic Paints. Some gels incorporate pumice, glass or acrylic granules that impart unique reflective, rough or absorbent surface qualities.

Gels can be thought of as colourless paint, as they are composed of 100% acrylic polymers similar to acrylic paint.
