About this deal
I explained that we would be doing this, working on it throughout the year, and the approximate costs. So I spoke to the other leaders and we decided as part of Advancement our Sparks would get a new camp blanket with a few fun badges to get them started. With my 2 younger ones, I folded them in half and tacked them into a smaller cloak, but sewed the badges on through one thickness, so I can unpick the stitches when they are big enough to prefer to use the whole blanket as they grow older/bigger. The smaller size is suitable for short naps in the living room and the bigger size is suitable for a long sleep in the bedroom.
We have a way to go to fill her blanket but within time I think she will fill it if she follows her guiding history with her paternal and maternal grandmothers being Girlguiding leaders, her grandmother being a Guide and so was both her great aunties and her mum who is a leader and has been in guiding since she was five. These blankets tend to sit in drawers unseen but with a cushion it is visible and provokes happy memories whilst showcasing all those hard won badges. My blanket is a visual reminder of the amazing opportunities that I have been lucky enough to experience and enjoy through being a member of Girlguiding.
Had a reply within a couple of hours and number available had been increased enabling me to purchase. Not sure how this whole poncho hole thing works - do all camp blankets look like this (or toggle thingy)? A few weeks ago, guest blogger and Brownie Guider Sarah of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, wrote for us what turned out to be a very popular post about the importance of her camp blanket in her Guiding and non-Guiding life.
This site is operated by GGC staff with guest contributions from GGC Members, volunteers and others. Blankets are an amazing teaching aid, and I encourage all my Brownies (and now Guides) to get blankets… I even suggest to parents to get them as gifts for the girls. Do you sew them onto a camp blanket, ideal for snuggling up in when away overnight in the great outdoors, or perhaps create a cushion out of badge-covered uniform when you move onto a new section?
