About this deal

Later on Bruce monologues about looters “not being his problem” before going off on some vaguely political tangent about the American dream. I suppose it was worth it to keep the art consistent for the whole series but it certainly made this climax even more underwhelming than it already would have been.

The story takes some leaps at times to get to where it wants to be, but still manages to keep the action and humor at appropriate levels. In an age where we are oversaturated with Batman books, one has to be judicious in choosing which ones to read.Across the eight issues of Batman: Fortress, Gary Whitta and Darick Robertson introduce readers to their own dark and violent vision of the DC Universe. Batman: Fortress revolves around the Dark Knight growing increasingly suspicious of Superman, fueled by Superman's abrupt disappearance after the invaders appeared. Some of the character personalities are a bit off, but it can all be chalked up to the alternate timeline.

Batman teams up with some very unlikely heroes (the Justice League is quickly put out of commission by the aliens), leading to numerous unexpected scenarios with surprising outcomes. An ok story that kind of confuses me why it's a Batman story as it quickly becomes all about Superman. Batman carries bacon in his utility belt because he often runs into guard dogs, he points out that he uses it more often than Bat Shark Repellent. Batman’s dynamic with Lex is particularly fun, echoing their similar dynamic during Joshua Williamson’s all-too brief run on the main Batman ongoing comic book series, with Lex as the billionaire genius who knows exactly how to get under Bruce Wayne’s skin.Even if it did fit the themes and the whole book was cohesive in that sense it wouldn’t change the fact that at its core this was a directionless comic with no central point and nothing interesting to say about the characters.

Natürlich will Bruce herausfinden, was es damit auf sich hat, und schnell stellt sich heraus, dass alles von einem seltsamen außerirdischen Objekt verursacht wird. Faced with extraterrestrial invaders determined to eradicate life on Earth as long as Superman defends it, the Man of Steel and Batman come up with a surprising solution: A Kryptonian power transfer. Superman is permitted to live, so long as he is permanently depowered, which is achieved through a molecular chamber within the Fortress of Solitude. If Diego Rodriguez’s colors weren’t so good, many pages in this comic would look downright unprofessional. With the exception of a few characters these are all very much Whitta’s interpretations and unfortunately rather than feeling like fresh new takes, they usually come across as mischaracterized versions of the traditional.I thought this would be Batman making the Bat-cave and his city a fortress to hold back the darkness and evil. But there's some off-model art and some story and character elements that only work if you truly embrace that this is an elseworlds/what-if type of universe. A very interesting and action packed Elseworlds story with a very interesting latter third and a really fun ending.

Here’s the thing: When DC publishes a Batman miniseries, it comes with the implication of being special in some way. There is certainly a story presented, but I am not sure that it would have been successful at garnering an audience. But it's also expertly paced with amusing dialogue and a central mystery that's surprisingly crunchy. Many of these conversations are stagnant enough that Darick Robertson is unable to flex his sequential muscles. This twist keeps in line with both characters on an abstract level – Clark Kent would give up his powers so long as he knows it saves lives and another Superman he can trust is willing to replace him. Generally portrayed as cool and collected aristocratic criminal, who refuses to get his hands dirty, Penguin is seen here attempting to choke a civilian to death with his bare hands and singing a traditional ballad like he was written by Tom King himself! The non-human characters always fare better but they aren’t drawn to the best of Robertson’s abilities either.
