About this deal

While this was a little more time-intensive and tricker to add on, it wasn’t hugely complicated and, again, the video really helped us through. This stylish balance bike has a low saddle starting position, making it a good choice for 2 year olds and smaller 3 year olds, especially as it has a steering limiter. Silicone hand grips, a padded seat and in-built footrests all upped the comfort level, but it was the addition of a faux leather bag at the front of the bike that really captured our testers’ imagination. This isn't an exhaustive test of the product or how well it performs – look to our Best winners for extensive testing in real life situations – rather, our First Look features are informed previews, providing a basic overview and getting a feel for the products most exciting features. This brightly coloured bike is decorated with distinctive paint splodges and for further personalisation, a Squish sticker set is included.

To encourage kids to get moving, the frame is designed to be low enough to stand over with confidence, but high enough to sit on. Hornit says that the tyres should already be inflated on arrival, but they may need topping up to the correct air pressure – this was the case with the model we received, which may be a downside for families who don’t own a lot of bike equipment. Our reviewer appreciated that the instructions were written assuming no prior knowledge about bike maintenance, as cycling jargon can be intimidating for a newbie.

Hornit have recently launched a brand new range of balance bikes aimed towards the premium end of the market in terms of both design and functionality. Also, there does appear to be a mount on the rear stay and potential cable guides on the underside of the down tube, so perhaps a brake option will become available? The Hornit AIRO is for children from the age of 18 months up to around five years old (with an inside leg measurement of 30cm to 48cm).

This would be a big help for the littles that put their bikes down, grab the handlebars to pick it up and before you know it they are headed down the driveway hill with backwards handlebars. The large inflatable tyres are tough enough to handle all kinds of terrain, although we felt the bike itself performed much better on smooth paths and playgrounds.
