The short answer is that it gives you more tonal options by offering extra pickup-wiring configurations. With a three-way selector and only two pickups, the American Elite Telecaster is simpler than the American Elite Stratocaster. Debuting with a transparent butterscotch finish, single ply 'Blackguard', maple neck with walnut back stripe, the Telecaster would go on to become the most successfully mass-produced electric guitar in history.
