The Machrie Moor 10 and the Arran 10 that I’ll review here were both distilled around 2011 in the same stills. V. As with every whisky, Machrie Moor comes with the industry standard romanticized cliches which tie the whisky to the island’s ancient past and legends.

There is no reason whatsoever why the importer should stick a paper sticky label on top of the original distillery label. Anyhow, these thoughts have been bouncing about my brain because a few weeks ago I was on Arran, doing my level best to pretend that the technological revolution never took place. As far as colour is concerned, they both have the same identical dirty chardonnay white wine straw colour. Located on the beautiful isle of Arran, situated in the Firth of Clyde between Ayr and Campbeltown on Scotland’s west coast, the Lochranza distillery is nestled in a lush landscape.Palate: A robust dram with the typical orchard fruits of Arran coming to the fore over a layer of toasted brioche and red berries. Surprisingly sweet and honeyed, and the booze is very well controlled considering the lightness of body.

In its relatively short life, the distillery has built and maintained a good reputation among whisky drinkers. As expected, it is impeccably distilled but the smokey peatiness adds a new level - I almost said thrill - to a superb product. We have the right to ask you to provide proof of your age and/or to provide further identification to prevent underage usage and/or for any other legal or legitimate purpose. Although the marketing instils a vision of wild, untamed landscapes and sodden peat bogs, Machrie Moor isn’t very overpowering or complex, and, at around 20ppm, it is one of the lighter peated whiskies – slightly more than fellow Islander Talisker yet nowhere near heavyweights like Ardbeg.
