About this deal

A shriveled body found in a bog seems to bear resemblance to this dashing hero, right down to the South Sea tattoos that blacken his buttocks.

And, while I think of it, the policeman who deals with the stuff in the Lakes is pretty bloody crap.At the end the Auntie's house burns down and the stupid manuscript is destroyed any way because the dumb ass aunt just kept it in a box or a book or something. The additional story of Jane's friendship and growing love for a young 13 year old black girl, Tenille Cole (her neighbour in Marshpool, one of London's rundown public housing projects), rounds out the story nicely, adds a tinge of modern day reality, lifts the tale out of the somewhat stuffy world of pure academia and gives The Grave Tattoo overall a somewhat more US-centric thriller flavour.

Woven into the Tale is the story of Fletcher Cristian and his ancestors along with that of one of Lake Districts' most famous citizens, William Wordsworth. The police are looking for Tenille and to add to Jane's problems, her ex-boyfriend, now Historical Document Dealer, is stalking Jane through the Lake District trying to get a lead on the important and valuable documents from Wordsworth that everyone believes exist.Once back in Cumbria, Jane finds that some letters and unpublished papers may have been left by Wordsworth to his servant, Dorcas Mason, and starts to track down her descendants, locating and approaching those she finds most likely to have had them passed down, all woman and a man in the 80s. While I made it to the end this time, I previously put down another book he authored whose plot caught my attention because I could not connect with the writing. Lost manuscripts, 200-year-old enigmas, an isolated Derbyshire village mystery and oodles of atmosphere: McDermid concocts a fascinating brew which is miles away from her customary bloody excursions into the realms of the perverse.

My only personal gripe is wish two of the tattoos were a tad bit larger especially the rose tattoo to match the other larger tattoos for the other arm. Watching friends die and neighbors turn on one another, Omar Yussef decides that “it’s time for me to scream. Alarmed by her demands for a moral accounting, David turns to his brother, who discovers that this mystery woman is a video artist, secretly taping her sexual encounters and selling them through high-end art dealers. An ambitious reworking of the demi-historical mode of Possession with a mutiny substituting for one love story and a series of murders taking the place of the other. The majority of the story was set in the Lake District and descriptions of waterfalls and hills and lakes, as always, appealed to the geography geek in me. She believes that the Lakeland poet William Wordsworth, a friend of Christian's, may have sheltered the fugitive and turned his tale into an epic poem – which has since disappeared. Despite her inside track on the connection between the sailor and the poet, however, there are some important things Jane doesn’t know.
