About this deal

It also presents a final act so devastatingly modern in its interpersonal relationships that it beggars belief that this film is actually just over fifteen years shy of celebrating its centenary. Rarely have women been shot with such obvious adoration as they have here, though Rollin pays almost as much attention to the locations and sets as he does to his starlets, ensuring that the film always looks top notch even when the ladies aren't on screen. Set in 1905, the story concerns a group of aristocratic women who acquire more epicurean tastes after drinking ox's blood as a cure for anemia. So for the 'true' anamorphic transfer, the Dutch release would seem to be the best, whereas the UK Dark Side release contains the best range of extras.

Diese Rezension bezieht sich auf die UK-BD des Labels "Black House", die 2012 erschien und auf der der Film in einer Länge von 81:33 Minuten im französischen Original mit zuschaltbaren englischen Untertiteln zu sehen ist. Luckily Eva comes to the rescue dressed in only a black cloak and some long leather boots and swinging a scythe at all the right people. Sadly, the French Dolby Stereo track doesn't fair much better, as an array of pops and noisy hissing come up frequently. He had scored a major hit in 1928, writing, directing and starring in The First Born – based on his own play and starring opposite Madeleine Carroll. Her darker chin length hair playing contrast to Lahaie's longer blonde locks, her red lipstick playing contrast to her pale skin - she's quite beautiful here and it Rollin's camera doesn't worship her quite as obviously as it does Ms. They must have been distracted from their cause by all the lesbian lovemaking they had been indulging in until that very morning. Some staining on the print flickers in and out for a few minutes, but it's not enough to detract from the beauty of the film or the clarity of its presentation. Unfortunately for the gang members, their leader (Jean-Marie Lemaire) takes off with the gold and heads off to a nearby French chateau.

His films can be said to be fantasy films mixed with horror , although this one is more straight horror. Threatening them with his, er, gun the women appear to be distinctly unperturbed by his aggressive attitude towards them. Still, Rollin thinks somewhat outside the box with his vampire concepts here, which makes his low-budget vampire exploitation flick worth a Rental. Black levels are solid and generally very strong and whatever softness shows up in the picture has always been there. She visits Gwenda in her dressing room, whereupon the two ladies talk over their mutual attraction for Larry. But this does have a plot and is a solid movie, some of this directors movies are real art house stuff and this is a standard tale of anemia victims who pray on men for their blood! Why the two vampiresses hadn't found a suitable male by the morning of their ritual gets the eyes rolling a bit in its ease of plot construction, but Rollin makes certain to give enough luring eye candy to try and distract from pithy things like logic. Like most Rollin films, the ending is both tragic and haunting, with a highly memorable final image and line of dialogue.

Being an original exhibition print, continuous cinema projection during its theatrical run has resulted in missing frames, tears and general film damage throughout. widescreen 1080p high definition presentation mastered from the original 35mm negative in a presentation that puts previous DVD incarnations to shame. There is apparently also a heavily cut German DVD on the market, with a classification lower than FSK-18. However, vocal claritycan be fairly strong in some sequences, as can the slamming of doors and other hollow effects in the chateau. Good extras too including a booklet, trailers and Mondo Macabro documentary on French horror/Jean Rollin. Damage is still evident throughout with some stains and specks popping up, but it's definitely a substantial improvement.

Though extremely low budget, the result is one of his finest, most elegant accomplishments and one of the safest introductions to Rollin's style. The original film was made over 90 years ago and recorded on material which in no way was long-lasting. Rollin's Fascination rises to its most compelling levels late in the game by taking a non-supernatural path in explaining these voracious female vampires. The UK release contains a good range of extras - note, however, that it is cropped slightly and the credits, while contemporary, are tacked-on oddly after the end of the film. Also present are two highly desirable softcore outtakes (with Lahaie) totalling around fifteen minutes and apparently shot if the film was required for export to more liberal territories, plus a twenty five minute documentary about Rollin that I originally saw broadcast on British TV surprisingly. She uses her body to speak when dialogue would have probably felt forced or phony and while there's no doubt that her experience in the most intimate of positions in front of the camera probably helped a lot with her work here, you've got to give her credit for emitting a seriously intense screen presence that is as memorably bizarre as it is seriously sexy. Included here in revised, more finely edited versions are the Rollin video intro (2m21s), a "Rituels" (7m42s) making-of featurette by Daniel Gouyette (Rollin's assistant) with Nathalie Perry and Lahaie, the D'Aram interview (19m42s), the deleted sex scenes, the "Virgins and Vampires" episode, and the French trailer, plus a 74-image gallery.
