The social deduction element of Deception Murder Deception in Hong Kong relies on the players not being able to hear the murderer moving during the initial phase otherwise you’ll narrow it down pretty quickly. But compared to the agony of being the ghost in Mysterium, the tension in Deception feels so watered down. If you’re the scientist you have to select between a range of options, none of which are good, to give clues that are at best incredibly ambiguous and non-specific given the range of cards in front of each player.

Everyone closes their eyes once that’s been determined, and then everyone opens their eyes once more. At this point the group can start a discussion as to who they think the murderer may be based on the clues given. This would make things very hard for the murderer, but the game balances this out well with one caveat – if the murderer can guess the identity of the witness at the end of the game, they win.Social deduction works when people are freed from too much structure and are given the chance to be creative with their lying and manipulating. The Scientist begins with two scene tiles in front of them, the cause of death and location of crime and then adds four others from a facedown stack. This makes it harder for the other players to discover who is the Cylon is as every player has spent the first half of the game helping. You now get to sit there and be entertained by your friends as they conjure more and more ridiculous theories of how this thing went down. A seer has the power to look at someone’s role card, but other characters like the robber and troublemaker can switch these around during the night.

The forensic scientist person has to pick exactly one option from the handful presented on the card. If nobody is brave enough to solve the case at this point, then the game moves onto the second round.Deception at its heart is a simple guessing and light deduction game, but when imbued with life by the players it can be so much more. Best of all, you have the option to customise the wordpool for themed games and endless replayability.
