Seren can picture it all: Captain Jones would be mustached, tall and imposing, and Lady Mair is sure to be lovely and kind.and imagine yourself stranded in a spooky old house, on the edge of a frozen lake, in the middle of nowhere, listening to this story unfold. I don’t mean to sound repetitive but it is rare for me to read a string of books that all give me something new.

I would certainly recommend this book to someone else as it was a real cliff hanger and action story that I really loved. The start of a series featuring the intelligent, questioning heroine Seren in a world that's a mixture of Victorian England (well, Wales), magic and folk tales, this book reminded me strongly of the books I read over and over as a child, particularly A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The housekeeper eventually tells Seren that “Tomos went out of the house for a walk after breakfast one morning, and he never came back…. In the end, half of the kids liked the story, and half of us didn't (simply, as I say, for bad editing). A really cute and short middle grade read that feels more like the traditional stories of my childhood (the secret garden, a little princess) than more modern stories.

I felt for Seren and the fact that what she wanted for life was so simple yet had been unattainable thus far. When she finally arrives at her destination, to find that her godfather, his wife and young son Tomos are absent, and only a skeleton staff of servants to meet her, she assembles the contents of the parcel to stave off boredom and loneliness.Uniqueness – I seem to be saying a lot recently, about how the plots I’m reading are either unique or a different take on an old classic. The package contains a crotchety, mechanical talking crow, which Seren reluctantly brings to her new home. The story is rich with the sense of old magic and fairytale, yet is a totally original and particular bit of storytelling. There is a tantalising element to the darkness, the details and the energy of reading Gothic that appeals to me. Seren resists and finds Tomos, but he doesn’t seem to realize he needs rescue, although he does admit that he’s been “lying on this bed for a few minutes trying to work it out.
