About this deal

Their father, blamed with stealing fuel from another airship before his ship crashed, violated the laws of explorers, and therefore, lost everything in his name. Reminiscent of The Series of Unfortunate Events, these twins find themselves in one precarious situation after another as they try to prove their father’s innocence and redeem the Brightstorm name. This is a very well-paced book, with plenty of action and high-stakes, as well as lovely personal and tender moments and introspection. If you read the book Maudie will tell you several versions of the truth about how he came to lose his own arm, but Arthur is pleased with his iron one. Just like us, they look out for each other, care about each other, encourage each other, and even tease each other.

It really is a wonderful story: colorful, well-rounded characters; imaginative steampunk contraptions; unique creatures and their bonds with humans; a surprising depth to its world-building; enough table-setting for many more adventures to come.Le résultat est à la hauteur des espérances - ça m'a presque fait penser à la série d'Alex Bell ( Le Club de l'Ours Polaire).

The descriptions of the sky-ship make you feel like you are flying with Harriet and her crew, whether you be staring out from aboard the deck or looking out whilst perched on a wing. One will usually have the energy for two and is always there to chivvy the other along in weaker moments and take turns being “the strong one”. Often compared to old, married couples, boy/girl twins will argue and tease with the power that comes from a deep understanding of your opponent but the conflict is soon resolved and the fierce sense of care and compassion shines through. This gives them an advantage in the race south because water is a readily available resource, unlike pitch. I didn't see the plot twist at the end, I'm extremely curious to see what will happen in the sequel.Eudora Vane belongs to a great and ancient Explorer family, and she will stop at nothing to keep her family name great. We can’t wait for the publication of Darkwhispers in February 2020 and the next Brightstorm adventure! Following the adventures of two twins, Arthur and Maudie Brightstorm, the adventure begins with the news that their explorer father has died whilst trying to reach the South Pole. I adored their relationship, they really completed each other and the way Maudie would jump on anyone who dared come after her brother.

Arthur, Maudie, and the rest of the Aurora crew are going on a mission to the Volcanic North, where years before their parents discovered the moth that is their family symbol. What they’ve been told about their father doesn’t make sense and they are determined to discover the truth and clear their family name. Harriet, Maudie, Arthur, and the indominable ship's cook, Felicity, race through bitter cold across treacherous ice. It probably has a slightly younger target audience, but the adventure components are there and the airships, animals, and general exploratory adventure that they embark on all gave me those His Dark Material vibes. I love books that center on explorers and adventurers, so Brightstorm right away seemed like something that I would like.Brightstorm is an adventurous middle grade novel that is full of exploration, fascinating characters and settings, and some really great messages about family and friendship. Stripped of their home and inheritance, the Brightstorms are essentially sold off by their de facto legal guardian as housekeepers to the Beggins, a malevolent pair of busybodies occupying a poorer section of Lontown known as the Drips. They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated! Since I’m not an avid reader of steampunk, I may be complaining about something very common and very popular in the steampunk culture.

Unable to believe that their father would do such a terrible thing as steal, they decide to do everything they can to investigate further. With his death and the children now orphaned, Arthur and Maudie are thrust from a life of comfort, to one of destitution. Hardy balances the struggles of moving through that pain and shock while also navigating life and learning that there can still be joy in it really well, and I say that as someone who also lost a father at a young age. Because although Brightstorm might not be the most original book out there, it’s still SUPER entertaining! Firesong pitches Arthur and Maudie into the Volcanic North in a bid to rescue the family name from their evil aunt Eudora Vane. But when something strange makes them question this story, Maudie and Arthur must set out on a daring journey to try and discover the truth.
