About this deal

Besides the conundrum of whether Patrick Fogler is a killer, being set up or simply the obvious suspect, there’s so much I relished about this book. The best way for me to explain this would be to use my favorite analogy — Yes… I’m a nerd… I have a favorite analogy. Claire is a British actress who is looking for work in America, but can't get hired without a green card. There were chapters were she was either in class or acting in a play and I could see the connections between the two.

When it mostly means that the narrator deliberately conceals key facts from the reader for no purpose other than to create confusion and suspense, it feels a little cheesy. I loved reading about Claire, both in what she acknowledges, as well as what Delaney allows us to see as observers of her story. The narrative was told from a single perspective, but that was necessary to keep the suspense going, and it was fully sufficient for me.She takes the only part she’s offered: as a decoy for a firm of divorce lawyers, hired to entrap straying husbands, catching them on tape with their seductive propositions. She ends up working off the books, cash only for the law firm, Kerr and Adler, with their ex-cop investigator, Henry, filming married men coming on to her for their wives who have become suspicious of them. Whilst the plot is pretty implausible, it's still a very exciting story that I just couldn't stop listening to. When the wife of one of Claire’s targets is violently murdered, the cops are sure the husband is to blame. And, it was because this author truly took her time with our protagonist’s shift, from being relatively certain that her mark was a perverted serial killer to developing an infatuation and, dare I say, falling in love with him, that it was so amazingly effective.

It’s what the infusion of this uncertainty added to depth to the character that I found absolutely delightful. The reader is never quite sure if what is happening in Claire’s life is real or simply played out in her head as a movie script as so much of the novel is written as a script narrative.Albania, Algeria, American Samoa, Andorra, Angola, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Armenia, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bahrain, Barbados, Belgium, Belize, Benin, Bermuda, Bhutan, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde Islands, Cayman Islands, Central African Republic, Chad, Chile, China, Colombia, Comoros, Cook Islands, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Democratic Republic of the Congo, Denmark, Djibouti, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), Finland, France, French Guiana, French Polynesia, Gabon Republic, Gambia, Germany, Ghana, Gibraltar, Greece, Greenland, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guam, Guatemala, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Kiribati, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Latvia, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liberia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macau, Macedonia, Madagascar, Malawi, Malaysia, Mali, Malta, Marshall Islands, Martinique, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mayotte, Mexico, Micronesia, Moldova, Monaco, Mongolia, Montenegro, Montserrat, Morocco, Namibia, Nepal, Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Niger, Niue, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Palau, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Republic of Croatia, Republic of the Congo, Reunion, Romania, Saint Helena, Saint Kitts-Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Solomon Islands, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Svalbard and Jan Mayen, Swaziland, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Turks and Caicos Islands, Tuvalu, Uganda, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Vatican City State, Venezuela, Virgin Islands (U. I have mixed feelings because I really enjoyed the first half and was looking forward to a compelling end, but it turned out to be more confusing and bizarre than what I could even imagine. I have a hard time understanding why the author (actual name: Tony Strong) wants to throw in everything he knows about his subject. We are—well, ask Bigfoot, as Brooks does in this delightful yarn, following on his bestseller World War Z (2006). However, this short summary hooked me and made me excited to read this book, mostly because I liked the idea of a decoy temptress. The most fascinating use of this theme is in the way that characters are unsure whether they are deceiving not only others, but themselves. It started so well, Claire, a wannabe actress studying at the impressive Actors' Studio in NYC, is working as a honeytrap to elicit some income. But it’s not what one would think in any way, Claire works for a law firm going undercover to catch cheating spouses since acting jobs are hard to come by for someone without a green card. Is it just me who does this—who feels they’re constantly watching themselves in the movie of their own life? One out-of-work British actress pays the rent on her New York City apartment the only way she can: as a decoy for a firm of divorce lawyers, hired to entrap straying husbands. I have to confess that the lawyer in me worried her way through the honey trap scenes but they’re crucial. And, though she does so thinking she’s the spider, trapping Patrick in the intricacies of her gossamer web, she quickly comes to realize that she may have it backwards.
