I loved how the dark creatures were terrified of the light creatures and told 'ghost-stories' about them, making it such a delightful opposition. It has twenty short chapters, is just over 200 pages long and is packed with black and white illustrations.

How she does it and how she teaches the Prince a valuable lesson manners, friendship and acceptance is the main thrust of the book. Amelia sets off determined to retrieve Squashy away from the awful prince but can she and will she succeeded and what is wrong with the prince to make him so awful?Furthermore might this have something to do with his father’s absent behaviour and mother’s disappearance.

Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first. The characters are such a delight in this, Amelia is so fun to follow and I love her friendship with Florence and Grimaldi.

This makes Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball a very satisfying, funny and curious opening title to a wonderful series. Her mother puts the need to please the King before her own daughter on several occasions - for example she lets prince Tangine take Amelia's pet and when she protests and stands up for herself, she tells her "not to be hysterical and not to cause a scene". Not only does he insult Amelia’s friend Florence, kick glitter upon her mother’s most elegant gown, eat the entire dinner menu, but seizes Amelia’s pet pumpkin! It's silly, in that Addams Family vein of humor where things could be scary but instead are delightful. We love the charming and funny illustrations, ghoulish puns and jokes and the wonderfully inventive magical creatures from mischievous caticorns to unicorn lords and terrifying angel-kittens.
