The chanteuse makes for an immensely engaging female lead and her first foray into acting should be commended as she plays the bland role with sympathy and a great deal of allure.

In Victorian England, two siblings prepare to showcase their own version of Dickens' classic story in their toy theatre, narrated by their grandmother (Sian Phillips), while one of the children imagines the story coming to life as modern dance. You get the Christmas edition of Doctor Who Confidential in all its glory featuring the cast and crew in some delightful locations (particularly the use of the TARDIS interior) as well as the turning on of the Cardiff Christmas Lights. Only The End of Time Part 1 ( review HERE) so far can claim to be a proper “story” whereas the other specials are, for want of a better word, fluff. The fantastical morality play takes audiences on a thrill ride through Dickensian London, as it tells the story of grouchy Scrooge and his refusal to embrace the Christmas spirit. When the viewer witnesses his joy opening the “tomb” containing Abigail whilst wearing a Fez or Tom Baker~style scarf (a touch which, I confess, brought a tear to my eye), we feel it too, so enthusing is his performance.

Despite my own slight disappointment of the episode itself, the extras certainly make A Christmas Carol a worthwhile purchase – three hours on one disc for about a tenner ain’t bad at all. There is a darker tone to this than I have seen in this story before, so it could be pushed to a 15-cert, which might make it look less of a prospect as a family movie, even though youngsters may want to. Empire - ItÆs always a good story, this time told more creepily than usual, Time Out - Cinematographer Robert Presley and the design team provide many instances of graphical triumph, influenced by silent cinema. Fabulous renendision of a remake of Scrooge, this being animated/compugraphics, but a superb version, very much in the same version or the timeless classic Scrooge staring Alister Sim! I've heard nothing but praise for the episode–we enjoyed it so much we watched it twice–and most people I've spoken to thought it was utterly charming.

Scrooge is shown visions of Christmases past, present and future which force him to reconsider his selfish lifestyle, but is it too late for him to change his nature? As with The Polar Express , Zemeckis animates the film over the actors' physical performances onscreen, but here, the emotion is intact--even heightened by the brilliant effects.
