The title of this book is certainly intriguing and led me to believe this novel would most likely be the kind twisty domestic thriller I can’t seem to get enough of. Knowing what was going to happen to me and some idea of time frames would have at least alleviated some of the stress. Indeed, the novel does double duty as a survival manual, packed full of good advice—for instance, try not to get wounded, for “injury turns you from a giver to a taker. Young children are “keen observers and poor interpreters,” (a phrase I learned at the Parent Encouragement Program). Every single character was completely damaged but not to the point that it made them disturbingly endearing, just quite irritating.

The two of them also have an autistic son named Tom who lives away from them, going to a boarding school that can accommodate his needs. You can say to your daughter (if she’s a bit older and is taking note of the family behavior and your resentment), “Dad’s family has been this way for time eternal; I’m not going to change them. It's not really a thriller-thriller; the focus is the book is more on the complex relationships between all the characters, and ALL of them have done terrible things. I hoped she would just quit and leave him to play games by himself in prison but, alas, that doesn't happen.

The ending was a little much for me but the audio version really made me feel like I knew the characters better.And seriously, what creative writing expert, or editor for that matter, would allow sweeping cliches as "went from strength to strength"? I also dragged myself out of bed,a few hours sleep with the aid of a couple Zopiclone ,Doctor has given me some stronger ones ,I have had grief before with my parents and my son who 28 when hit by a car but this is way above that,losing my wife of 32 years has completely wiped me out. A woman, widowed far too young at forty-five, surrounded by three other women, old friends, a group supremely at ease in each other’s company. It’s not a given that we’ll get on with our friends’ partners – it doesn’t sound as if you like Roger much either? No-one can take away the pain we feel when we lose our nearest and dearest but for me there is some comfort in knowing that there are others out there who truly understand what it feels like.
