About this deal

For those of you not familiar with the Altus, people refer to it as a poncho but it really is a long raincoat with sleeves, a zipper and a hump for the backpack and you don’t need rain pants with it. So, I have no problem with ponchos, used them in the past and if my only choice was to purchase a poncho, I’d probably get the biggest one I could find that doesn’t drag on the ground.

If you are staying in private accommodations in late October-March,for sure, you will have sufficient heating to dry out your clothes and shoes. My first introduction was when my son hiked 1000 miles of the Appalachian trail in the spring a few years ago in LOTS of rain and was kept dry in the jacket/rain pants. Here’s what I’m wondering – can I count on this thing to hold out the water, or would it be a good idea to seam seal it?Privacy -- great emergency privacy screen when needing to do a 'nature break' and natural coverage of bushes or tall grass is scarce. I like to be able to put my rain gear on and off without stoping to take off my backpack, so the Frogg Toggs would not be my first choice, but I'm going with a couple of other people who may need gear, hence the question.

At first I thought the noise must’ve been unseen jet planes, but it wasn’t long before the wind picked up and I turned around to see the massive storm clouds creeping toward me. Someone explained that the metallic lining is to prevent hypothermia, so it may be a fine winter poncho, but not for me and the camino. The hood fits comfortably, but it does not have a bill to keep rain away from my face (There's your 1/2 star removed in the rating. The FT poncho is much more bulky than my sil poncho, so I carry the sil, which also has extra tabs to work as a UQP or pseudo Grizz beak. Higher temperature, soap and detergents can ruin the waterproof coating of the fabric and the seam tapes. Check out our comprehensive Guide to Rain Jackets to earn your degree in waterproof-onomics, and read on to see why the Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2 Jacket is the best bang for your buck in rain gear. WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects and other reproductive harm.

It started off as a bright, sunshiny kind of day on the Pacific Crest Trail where clear blue skies offered me an unobstructed view of that morning’s solar eclipse. His first backpacking trip was on Isle Royale National Park in 2007, where he was given the trailname Goose. It tapes up fine, but I figured the added weight from taping it up so many times would outweigh the benefits at some point.

Oh btw I have seen the new yellow Altus in the flesh so to speak, and if you - like me - thought that a nice lively yellow would brighten up your rainy day and make you more visible, beware it really is a dull mustard and not very cheery or bright at all. Ditto on the philosophy of prioritizing keeping your gear in your pack dry versus keeping yourself dry.Similarly, a poncho made from wool or cotton will keep you warm, but cannot protect you from the rain. Still, those little plastic ponchos are a sweat box and durability, well, even being careful the best I can do is a couple of days. For example, A third of the Way into the Camino Frances, I purchased the Altus Poncho which is really a rain-overcoat that is made large so that it fits over your backpack.
