My previoulsy purchased copies of Undertow and Opiate were underwhelming, particularly given that I generally have appreciated early punk rock tool more than later prog rock Tool.

Sounds equal to or at least as good as the CD box set, which my 11-year-old son has, also an excellent product. A fine example of what the group have always done so well - running with wolves like Mogwai, only with far more metal sensibilities, and a damn-sight bigger helping of experimentalism, when this bad boy arrived in 2019 it shot straight to the top of the US Billboard 200, the third consecutive record from the group to do so.Opiate ² is a special limited-edition package, that includes a reimagined and extended version of the TOOL classic track. Formed in 1990 in Los Angeles, California – Tool emerged with a heavy metal sound on their first studio album, Under. It might have to do with the fact that the lacquers are cut by Bernie Grundman and that someone IRL oversaw the plating and pressing procedure. Matte finish with 9-sided geometric pattern on back, no solid circles at points, sides have a gloss geometric repeating pattern.

With the effort that the band puts into creating a soundscape, it's refreshing to see such responsibility taken for the follow-through. The first official vinyl version made available was the ultra deluxe 5LP boxset, when copies signed by the band were sold exclusively at Tool shows from February 20 2022.

Records housed inside a full-colour, mirror-board printed, hardcover book featuring alternate front cover artwork, extra artwork, lyrics and credits all within a full-colour, mirror-board printed hardcover slide-out box, although not advertised as a box-set. This is all subjective, of course, and really not that important in the end, but still worth mentioning. But even still, after thirteen years of waiting for new material, Tool fans deserved a better thought out album. The gatefold have a lot of nice images but what takes the whole down a bit is the insert, one side is a very nice artwork, the other is a sloppily produced information and lyrics sheet where the 7empest is both misspelled (Tempest) and lyrics omitted, the only reason seems lack of space .

The most intense songs on the album are Pneuma and 7empest and they're half the intensity of anything else they've recorded previously.

From the the very first note, this album takes me back to cruising down the highway, Maynard and the boys blasting from the tape deck. I know Tool and I know how much effort goes into their music so I figured at the very least this was also going to sound great. The sound is so unbelievably rich and being a huge fan of Danny Carey, there are sounds from him I can hear on vinyl i could never hear on mp3 or cd. The presentation and packaging is also done well, it’s almost like an art book, a little over the top but that's Tool. It doesn't sound like the band challenged themselves or grew in any meaningful way over the last thirteen years.Thing is, you see, Tool have been away for so long now that we’d assumed them consigned to history - it’s been thirteen years since they released ' 10,000 Days', you know. Tool has won three Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries. I recently purchased the 3 diac version (to accompany the big Beast of a package initial LP release), and my only. It plays quiet, every instrument is represented well in the mix and the heavy sections rip on a good system.
