About this deal

He learns that there are four vampire bloodlines (Ilon, Chastain, Dyvok and Voss); each possesses a unique ability or 'bloodgift', but he has none, making him a "frailblood. Gabriel in turn reveals that after being excommunicated, he and Astrid married and had a daughter named Patience. How did Liathe/Celene become an Esani sanguimancer vampire with ancient blood when she was turned by a Voss? The second half, however, was undoubtedly Jay Kristoff at his best, a magnificent 5 stars rating through-through. Everyone has a limit, and while some may completely disregard an author after their behaviour, for some that line may not have been crossed. And yet, at the same time, it is also a brilliant and bloody epic post-apocalyptic fantasy and vampire story. The story is a vast apocalyptic canvas, reminiscent of Justin Cronin’s THE PASSAGE or even Stephen King’s THE STAND, yet Kristoff’s work stands on its own ruthless merit as the opening gambit of a richer tale yet to unfold. On the plus side, I am confident a re-read of this book will offer a better reading experience now that I’ve known the character, their personalities, and their motivations. From the very first page recap and description of the characters you get a glimpse of the humour and one liners you are going to see throughout the book. It’s like they only existed for Kristoff to have other characters hurl insults at them and then tell them to leave. There are so many things to like about this book, so tell me – please tell me – why I’ve been left with such a foul taste in my mouth! I mean if you love a good vampire series and a story of redemption, love, and the will to survive and do what it takes, you really need to read this.

However, the issue I have with the first half of Empire of the Vampire was how these curses were implemented. In Empire of the Vampire, Kristoff utilized a framing narrative to tell the story of Gabriel de León. This volume is action-packed all the way until the cliffhanger, which I suspect will be the case when I read the full volume. I most definitely should have known that if there is one thing… one thing, that Kristoff likes, it is writing trilogies.I mentioned at the beginning of this review that I experienced both hell and heaven reading this book. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
