About this deal

Perhaps Lord’s best chapter, “Operation Dynamo” deals with how the Admiralty bureaucracy organized the diversified types of ships and crafts that would take part in the rescue of the BEF. Authored by an unknown German officer, the book provides insight into the German military’s perspective, strategies, and reactions during the critical days of the evacuation. Dunkirk: Fight to the Last Man” is a must-read for anyone seeking a profound and enlightening exploration of this pivotal moment in history.

Read this book either before or after seeing the movie and you will see how different the reality of this retreat was from what was portrayed on screen. The German High Command would capture Dunkirk mainly with infantry, thus saving the tanks for the main push. There may be books with more updated statistical data about the Miracle of Dunkirk but for pure readability I would highly recommend this one.

This would be ideal as a class read for those studying WW2 at school - especially as it presents a very different perspective of the war. The major theme addressed in The Miracle of Dunkirk is that a strong mentality can help you achieve and survive almost anything.

For Lord, this is spiritless, unimaginative writing--and that's what finally makes the book routine.Based on real life experiences, this book is one of a series bringing to light hidden histories for young readers. The author extends his story to events leading up to the evacuation and his many interviews with participants give a human element to the amazing rescue operation. Each crisis was solved only to be followed by another, but the joint refusal of men to be discouraged played its crucial role in the miraculous rescue. The story of Dunkirk has found its way into the British consciousness to such a degree it has come to epitomise the very essence of Britishness at times of national hardship. What sets Lord’s work a part from others is how he integrates the private stories and individual experiences of the soldiers and civilians who came to their rescue during the evacuation.

They've got a truck but they can't get to Dunkink, the Germans are now in the way, so, Knight figures, why not try to hook up with the Allied forces to the south? My reading this book right before the release of Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk film is not sheer coincidence. Seen in this light, Dunkirk remains, above all, a stirring reminder of man's ability to rise to the occasion, to improvise, to overcome obstacles. The evacuation at Dunkirk lifted more than 338,000 men from France to the safety of Britain using everything from Destroyers to pleasure yachts. Churchill did his best to soothe the man – reminded him of the dark days in 1918 when all turned out well in the end – but Reynaud remained distraught.

Being on the back foot, as the British Expeditionary Force was then, often brings out one’s true colours and it is a testament to the Regiment that this story is one of discipline, loyalty, and fearlessness in the face of the enemy.Robert Kershaw's accurate and gritty account provides a fresh coherency to the German action in Belgium and France in the spring of 1940. Discover the true story behind the iconic rescue mission that saved the lives of thousands of Allied soldiers during the Second World War. Walter Lord let you get to know the characters from the time they started fighting in France to the time they were rescued. Yes, all this makes for great storytelling, but Lord never lets you forget that this is a war, and that wars are brutal and unforgiving and if you can manage it best viewed through a distant lens. Yet, again, there are some lovely moments where Fazal and his best friend Mush get the opportunity to teach the British soldiers a little more about the culture and religion (both are Muslims) giving this story a spiritual backbone that isn't always found in children's books.
