About this deal

The real tragedy in either reading is that the story of these lovers can only exist within this window of time. While we are taken on a mind blowing journey when this world unravels in our minds in Daughter of Smoke and Bone, its sequel doesn't have the magic of learning the world, the fascination of experiencing for the first time what Laini has created. If anything she has improved and the inherent poetry to the writing has become sharper and more poignant. It is kind of hilarious, especially set to the backdrop of the plague breakout in Verona, which gives some perspective to the childish dramatics of our couple.

From Chicago to New York, London to Beijing, from the museums' wildlife dioramas, from the frozen, snarling mouths of lions and wild dogs, the jaws of Komodo dragon specimens and ball pythons and stuffed Arctic wolves, the girl, the phantom. Among the seraphim, Akiva, Hazael, and Liraz plan on how to kill the emperor Joram and his brother Jael in the hope of ending the war and leading to a more peaceful world. Also the scene with Karou and Akiva and Thiago in the same room and the scene after that was awesome. For the people interested in the romance part (which is not at all the only thing this book has to offer, but still, it’s important), you can trust me on this: We truly get an amazing star-crossed lovers tale here that has so much pain and self-loathing, but also so much hope and longing! Well, imagine if she woke up and he was still alive, but…” She swallowed, waiting out a tremor in her voice. The news that catches Zuzana's and Mik's attention is revealed to be about a phantom girl who has been stealing teeth from the wildlife dioramas of museums around the world. The first part of the book may be slow, but the second half is full of wicked fight scenes and great plot advancement that make you forget it was even slow in the first place.

After he is healed, Ziri tells Karou everything, including how Akiva summoned birds to let the Kirin escape. Part of me would love to see a film version of the series (if done well), but another part of me fears it could never live up to the book and the images it conjures in the reader's mind. The lighting was intimate, like the production in Slings and Arrows once it turns beautiful ( here at 2:50) and the couple was still dumb and cursed, but I may have teared up a couple of times because they were beautiful and hopeful. There was this idea that it could be noble to go back to someone who made you feel the worst you could possibly feel. Not only is she skilled at describing people and places in such a way that they come to life, but her writing, in and of itself, is lyrical and masterful. Now that Brimstone was killed by the seraphim, the chimaera have taken Karou back to their residence so that she can perform the art of resurrection, as she is the only chimaera left who knows the art. Reviled and isolated, she's worn out by the efforts of resurrectionist magic and begins to question Thiago's intentions for their people.

She also lacks any sense of belonging - she has lost the chimaera family that was her anchor, she is viewed with suspicion and disgust for past transgressions by the army she serves, and she is still trying to bind her two lives into one coherent whole. Karou manages to find the last few living chimera warriors and, although they don’t trust her at all, they let her stay with them because she’s learned enough of Brimstone’s trade to act as a resurrectionist, meaning that they can run off to fight the angels again, get themselves killed, and then, voila, she’ll bring them back in a new body.

Zuzana and Mik are chatting while a news reporter interviews Kazimir Andrasko about Karou, known to the world as "the Girl on the Bridge. Days of Blood and Starlight also differs from its predecessor in that Akiva and Karou barely share any scenes, which given the ending of Daughter of Smoke and Bone, is not surprising. But the villagers aren't the only things under the aqueduct, as the eight seraphim have the misfortune to find out. Breathe it in and hold it in my lungs for as long as possible before I’m forced to exhale or lose consciousness.
