Maggie, Leah and Esther were good for a few smiles throughout the story, but over all they were just typical teenage girls with nothing to make them stand out. And now, even though he is a new father again, all of his time is focused on working on his new, comeback, novel.

When Auden decides to spend her summer before college with her father Robert, stepmother Heidi, and newborn half sister in a small beach town, she undergoes a personal transformation. She meets him through a twist of many events, but they are quick friends and he shows her how to have fun while everything is sleeping. She regards her dad’s new wife, Heidi, as an over-enthusiastic girly girl with little to offer in the way of intellectual companionship. Auden's mother's romantic life is never mentioned in the movie, aside from a comment she makes about never wanting to get married again. She's snooty and judgmental when she visits Auden at the boutique but quickly comes to the rescue when Heidi crumbles under the pressure of new motherhood, encourageing her to stand up to Robert and giving tips on taking care of Thisbe. Auden initially can't stand Heidi's enthusiasm and love for pink but later learns that she was wrong about her. But she is mostly pleasantly surprised to have friends and to have the opportunity to do some things she never got the chance to do when she was young, like riding a bike.Leah always wants to go to Tallyho, a nearby club, and the other girls reply, "No, no, no to Tallyho. She's a master storyteller when it comes to writing about everyday life, and her characters are always so well-crafted and layered.
