If it is to open the eyes of modern audiences about World War I or fire their imagination, it stands as an urgent and potent piece of cinema. It doesn't sound that close to the 4-note beat in Annihilation, but it was distinctive in the same way and felt very similar in how it was used as a kind of punctuation. All Quiet on the Western Front historian's review: An ambitious, visceral exploration of life and loss in WW1". Whilst it is hardly a case of “seen one, seen them all” with war films and as a plethora of stories from different angles and perspective no doubt remain to be told, the fact the outcome is a matter of historical public record does take the shine off it a little. In 2023, Collider ranked it as the "Best Historical Epic of All Time," writing "War is not what they expect, and the film wastes no time in presenting the horrors of the battlefield in a raw, harsh and really horrifying manner. This doesn’t mean it is pro-War or pro-Germany, it retains the central prevalent anti-war message and does nothing to minimise the millions of needless casualties; however, it does portray the French as pompous and arrogant during the negotiation scenes yet also paints German General Friedrichs (Devid Striesow) as a warmonger. Then, if a probe lens comes in to get a closeup of a cub or the mom, they’re already used to it by that stage.

umer enlists in the Army because of the romanticized version of the First World War that he and his friends believe to be true. Its that it shows how the generals/commanders sending all these people to be murdered live on a complete different bubble. The viewers, however, have already seen these uniforms belonged to the dead, so when Paul goes away, holding the clothes with a beaming smile, the audience's heart aches for him. If issues also occur with the disc with an official player, we might have a chance of getting a replacement disc. Mark Kermode says that, although it is on Netflix, there is an excellent reason to see it in cinemas because it is "visually very, very impressive, overwhelming, and gruelling.

The film was eventually announced in February 2020 with Edward Berger directing and Daniel Brühl as part of the ensemble cast. It's also getting a 4K release, but this was my favorite Netflix film from 2022 alongside Pinocchio. The film is literally on nodding terms with the book and most of the story line from the book isn't even in the film! I would have given this film a 5 star rating, if it hadn't been given the title of such a classic work. In addition to the gore, there are other constants of war waiting for Paul and his teenager contemporaries, such as mud, hunger, and fear.

To those unfamiliar with the source material, it’s unclear if Paul's arc is a descent into an outright villain or if still holds onto his pre-war self. Trapped in a crater in no man's land with a French soldier, Paul stabs him and watches him die slowly, becoming remorseful and asking for forgiveness from his dead body. However, in this new adaptation, director Edward Berger omits all of that, and instead gives us a whole new story-line about the German High Command, which takes up about 30-40% of the movie.

All the added scenes with the peace negotiations and General Foch are so much more two-dimensional that the rest of the material. Not really a film to enjoy, but certainly a film to reflect on how far we haven't come since 1918, especially in a world that often seems so intent on pulling itself apart. After learning of the ceasefire, Paul and Kat steal from the farm one last time, but Kat is shot by the farmer's vengeful son and dies before arriving at an infirmary.I'm pretty sure it wasn't even on their site until the past few days because I checked sometime last week, and it wasn't on there. I'm really hoping this happens, but picture seems to be the same as the upcoming UK release minus the rating logos. It received a leading 14 nominations at the 76th British Academy Film Awards (winning seven, including Best Film) and nine at the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won four: Best International Feature, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design.
