About this deal

Suddenly, at just sixteen years old, Amal’s bright future is upended: he is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit and sent to prison. Despair and rage almost sink him until he turns to the refuge of his words, his art. This never should have been his story. But can he change it? Amal observes that authorities at school, in the justice system, and the public at large, do not see him, but rather construct a self they assign to him, "shaping me into / the monster / they want me to be" (p. 16). Where does that monster image come from, and why is it so easy to assign it to Amal?

I went in response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But I spoke privately to those recognized as leaders, for fear that I was running or had already run in vain. I had never read a novel in verse before this one but I definitely would love to read more in the future! Punching the Air was a powerful novel that is definitely a must-read for everyone. I highly recommend it! I don't think I can express how important, poignant and devastating this novel was to read. Written in collaboration with Yusef Salaam, one of the exonerated five, this clearly draws heavily in Salaam's own experiences to help shape the main character of Amal. Amal is simply a boy, in the wrong place, who makes one mistake that leads to devastating consequences. The book opens when 16-year-old Amal, a budding poet and artist, is sentenced to a juvenile detention center. Read the excerpt below.

Staring at your hands while throwing an air punch is an almost natural reflex to a lot of people. However, it’s a deterrent to good form and thus effective exercising. But if you are a really fast sprinter, compared to your friends (at the same age/weight), chances are you have more fast-twitch muscle fibers, which means more explosive power and more powerful punches. Although shadow boxing is mostly a low impact exercise, it is highly effective. As such, it cuts down on an exponential number of calories especially if you incorporate some additional movements. He encourages participants to try the workout on their own; the techniques can also be done without weights. I absolutely loved Punching the Air. I felt so much during this book. I felt all the injustice for Amal. The writing style made me become instantly attached to Amal. Amal go through all the injustices his faced in juvie and leading up to then as well as childhood made me so sad.
