About this deal

It gives a strong impression that you can do it without needing to significantly change your current activities, which is appealing and certainly should make it an option worthy of consideration for those who are concerned that they might not commit to a more formal course.

It describes how to improve your well being by being aware of your surroundings and to take time out to practise set exercises and to meditate.I've seen that other readers who don't have children have skipped these parts, but actually I found them very interesting because while the exercises there don't have any practical application to my life, they describe how the brain develops through the various phases of childhood. This book, I feel, is more written in a diary form, like Ruby Wax has just jotted down a lot of thoughts, feelings and situations and slapped a cover on it. Ruby Wax shows us how to de-frazzle for good by making simple changes that give us time to breathe, reflect and live in the moment. With a Masters from Oxford in mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, Ruby is now also a mental health campaigner and author.

I think Ruby's perspective on this subject is addictive to read and has opened me up to trying methods I wouldn't of known about and to address my own thoughts. The author brings up fight, flight and freeze responses resulting from the sympathetic nervous system (most people add on the fourth ‘F’ response of fawn, but the author ignores that one). Sometimes we’re too focused on our little problems and we don’t understand what’s really important: pay attention. I'm conscious that the problem I had with this section of the book was that I was reading for leisure rather than as a deliberate decision to practice the exercises. She met French and Saunders at a party and worked alongside them a number of times, on television in Happy Families, at charity events such as Hysteria and notably the sitcom Girls on Top. Her six weeks program, which is the focus if the book, is also a departure from the usual eight weeks programs. She is Visiting Professor in Mental Health Nursing at the University of Surrey, an Ambassador for the charities Mind, Time to Change and Sane and sits on the board of the Anna Freud Centre.

This book will not erase your mental illness but it might help you accept the fact you have one and try and help you concentrate on your senses rather than your emotions. I don’t think that discussion about psychopharmacological drugs belongs in a book about mindfulness. Wax provides step-by-step guides to mindfulness practise that you can do daily - including practise for those if us with busy and active lives (or those who are not 100% taken by the idea of mindfulness). If the idea of mindfulness has always seemed a bit wishy-washy, you'll be pleased to know Ruby Wax once felt the same way. This is not intended to be a full statement of all your rights under the Distance Selling Regulations. I loved this as an audiobook, because Wax is engaging and entertaining, and I liked the guided mindfulness that you get with a voice telling you the steps.
