I've got a 95 and the hold light has been flashing but I didn't need a voltmeter, the hold light itself flashes the sequence when you short the relevant contacts and turn the ignition on (I have linked to a movie of this in my thread on my own problem. I think they disabled this though with some newer ones, due to people taking them back for faults etc. You could try a can of JLM dpf cleaner in the fuel tank maybe which may help to clear the dpf but for the glow plug light to be flashing the ecu must think the regen failed or was ineffective for some reason. Currently awaiting diagnosis report and hoping that the issue is either minor or covered under warranty.

I have just bought a A3 and the Glow plug symbol is flashing and it's saying Stop Start system fault. I went in to the service department to ask them about it but of course they wanted to book in for a diagnostic (which I did). I was driving along the motorway and the diesel glow light plug started to flash and I was losing power. Rather like booting up a computer in Safe Mode, one has top be grateful that the car is running at all.

Nope, it's the glowplug light, had that one myself when my LB died, easy one to check before going down the diagnostics route. The flashing glowplug light is, quite commonly, an indicator of a brake light or brake switch problem. Had the car checked out by an Audi independent and the timing belt was out and luckily no damage to engine.

b) If the mechanic didn't replace the cracked fuel filter housing, probably air is being sucked into the fuel system.OK, update - the glowplug indicator light is no longer flashing on the dash today but now there is a red battery light showing - this comes on after the car has been running for a few minutes!

By the time I got where I was going the engine was at temperature and the light had stopped flashing and gone off completely. Which is very close to what MB were asking with labour all in so could be tempted to go with MB direct.

Having said that, it does seem to be running fine - we did about 650 miles this weekend with no running problems - just a couple of starting issues! Stop/start hasn’t worked since I started doing only short journeys, apart from immediately after charging up the battery. flashing glow plug light can be a general fault,get it read with a simple diagnostic tool ,most common faults are faulty injector,egr valve or brake light switch(check your brake light function yourself by pressing brake pedal n see if lights come on).
