About this deal

My name was Kristy Sweetland, I was seventeen, and it felt as if someone had cut this particular path out of the Blanc Coeur National Forest for me--a narrow winding river of tar so smooth, my tires traveling over it sounded like nothing but breath and kisses, kisses and breath. The type of stories that have every girl from a young age looking over their shoulder anticipating something bad because that's what happens to girls, right? Although it takes a very willing suspension of reality for readers to believe the events, many of which don't make sense (could two girls and a male lifeguard disappear overnight and not have anyone in the camp notice? This was the real fun of the story, comparing their different descents into paranoia and the measures they went to to protect themselves, none of which really helped. I just wanted to get back to the camp and the creepy guys and the mystery of what was going to happen.

I wasn't beautiful, the way she was (I knew that, too), or dazzling like the other Kristi in my backseat, with her red hair and black-lashed green eyes--but I had what I wanted out of life for the moment: long hair, big blue eyes, rosy cheeks, a good tan, a white smile, big-enough breasts, and a little red convertible.

Kristi's voice had a tone that made it sound as if she'd been telling people all her life what to do, and they'd been doing it. The man who tied heavy chains around his murdered wife's body and tossed her into a lake, then came home to find her sitting in his chair-smiling, soaking wet.

The man who tied heavy chains around his murdered wife's body and tossed her into a lake, then came home to find her sitting in his chair—smiling, soaking wet. Her adult novel The Life before Her Eyes (Harcourt, 2002) is currently being made into a film and will probably drive even stronger interest in her work. This is one of those books that is terribly difficult to describe and boiling it down to its basic plot (cheerleader camp! Not only is she easy, but she’s also mean—she has “a handful of snow for a heart,” she cheats on all of her boyfriends, etc.

She understands the thought processes and pressures of these characters and if her books aren't set in the teen/childhood years most of the characters problems stem from those times in the character's life. Un camp de pom-pom girls et des jeunes filles qui vivent dans la séduction et dans le regard des autres, surtout des hommes. Of course, the three cute girls in shorts and bathing suits catch the attention of two "grubby" guys hanging out in their car. Kasischke's take on an urban legend through the lives of three teenage girls and the boys they touch is riveting.I've now read four of her books, and you'd think after reading Boy Heaven that I would expect or look for the big twist, but I don't: I simply let the story unravel, and I think it hits harder that way.
