About this deal

There are three drives in the TS-332X in RAID-5 but writes to those work great - ~300MB/s from PC to NAS. It seems only the TR-004 is affected. From people's experience here and what I've seen, I'd almost have to conclude that TR-004 shall have never been advertised as it can be used as a NAS storage (for its poor performance with RAID 5), as was described in the product manual and the advertisement video https://live.qnap.com/en/video/show/2430 or on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5_ahKpjF6A. But I do hope there is a solution that can make TR-004 as a NAS storage pool with RAIDs truly functional. Compared with other RAID enclosures, the TR-004 provides software-controlled configurations for greater management flexibility. Users can configure RAID and monitor disk health using Storage & Snapshots Manager on a QNAP NAS, or by using the QNAP External RAID Manager utility on their computer. Second, when I perform a write operation against the drive, while I perform a read operation, the speed of the read drops to ~40MB/s while the write is around ~30-40MB/s. Seems like a pretty severe penalty that shouldn't be the case. QuTS hero is the operating system for high-end and enterprise QNAP NAS models. With Linux and ZFS, QuTS hero supports advanced data reduction technologies for further driving down costs and increasing reliablility of SSD (all-flash) storage. System

Warning: Using unsupported modules may degrade performance, cause errors, or prevent the operating system from starting. The TR-004 does not support the following: the TS-128, TS-228, TS-131, TS-231, TS-431, TS-431U, and NAS models that cannot be updated to QTS 4.3.6 (or later). Was on the phone with QNAP support for 45 minutes. Tried various things. Time ran out for the day, so got off the phone and continued to troubleshoot. Here's one we both couldn't figure out: in Storage and Snapshots > External Storage, the "Type" for the tr-004 was showing up as USB 2.0, even though it was connected via USB-C on the tr-004 to USB-C on the TVS-872ZXT.

in regards to spindown, afaik, if you power off the nas, this would automatically put the connected tr-004 into a spindown state if i read this correctly. this feature was mentioned on reddit if not mistaken. Use Storage & Snapshots Manager to configure the TR-004 as a storage expansion unit for your QNAP NAS. In addition to RAID configuration, the NAS expansion storage mode supports various NAS functions, including storage pools and snapshots. By choosing external storage mode, you can use the TR-004 as a DAS. QTS is the operating system for entry- and mid-level QNAP NAS. WIth Linux and ext4, QTS enables reliable storage for everyone with versatile value-added features and apps, such as snapshots, Plex media servers, and easy access of your personal cloud. System

The TR-004 is a nifty little device that allows for users to set a RAID mode for the 4-bay device with DIP switches on the unit, or through software on their Windows or MAC machines. It claims to have a USB 3.2 gen 1 over USB C port, and is designed as a standalone DAS either for added storage to a QNAP NAS, but also as a standalone DAS for a Windows, Mac, or Linux PC. how r u configuring it to begin with ? since you plug direct into the 431, can i assume you are managing it via qts and not independently using the tr-004 windows management app? Hi all! I have a QNAP TS-332X with a TR-004 attached to it. QTS is 4.3.6.0895. The firmware ver on the TR-004 is 1.0.4. Inside I have white label Western Digital WD80EMAZ 256MB Cache - pulled from WD 8TB Elements Desktop Hard Drives WDBWLG0080HBK-NESN. Using TR-004 to manage drives, not software management, via dip switches. When I'm testing over network, I'm using a 8GB and a 33GB .mkv file, copying to/from NAS to my PC's Samsung 960 EVO to make sure the drive in my PC is not skewing results. Note: Use only QNAP memory modules to maintain system performance and stability. For NAS devices with more than one memory slot, use QNAP modules with identical specifications.anyway if you are interested on the topic, you can google "spindown vs 24/7 hard drive", there should be an answer on reddit or on quora on the subject. There are 2 camps, those for spindown, and those for keeping the disks on nas running 24/7. but in it was clearly stated for the tr-004, that it will AUTO spindown if you power off the nas if it's connected to the NAS directly via usb. The TR-004 provides an alternative method for users to expand their NAS storage capacity. By connecting the TR-004 to their NAS and using the Storage & Snapshots Manager, users can easily configure and manage their storage expansion. The TR-004 supports a variety of QNAP NAS storage and file management functions, allowing users to build storage pools, find files with Qsirch and organize files with Qfiling. Function The TR-004U can only be used as an individual storage pool or volume on the NAS. Its storage pool/volume cannot be combined into the connected NAS. NAS applications cannot be installed on the TR-004U. Perhaps the Enable Write Cache setting only controls write cache for internal drives and not external?

The TR-004 can only be used as an individual storage pool or volume on the NAS. Its storage pool/volume cannot be combined into the connected NAS. NAS applications cannot be installed on the TR-004. I had this same issue (30MB/s read and write speeds) and resolved it by uninstalling the USB drivers, rebooting my Win 10 PC, and allowing the system to reinstall the drivers. Now data transfers are around 200MB/s. I really don't think it has anything to do with supposed poor performance by the TR-004. The box works just fine, as advertised. Sometimes USB drivers need to be reinstalled and reinitialized, particularly when different devices (such as USB Headphones or a USB Mouse) are exchanged for another device (such as a mass storage device). At 512KB I/O Size and larger, RAID 0 and RAID 10 achieved right around 225-230 MB/sec write and 245 MB/sec read, with 4KB at about 22 MB/sec write and 25 MB/sec read. JBOD, which effectively is single drive speed at 64KB and above hovered around 175 MB/sec write and read speed, with 4K at about 25 MB/sec for both read and write. I then pulled a drive from the array, and got three very loud beeps and the status light blinking red. For myself i just power off my external tl-d400s. My nas is setup for 24/7 that never spins down, because my usage patterns would probly trigger spinups/downs too frequently, so my case it's probly not worth it. also i'm not aware if whether my own device can keep the tl-d400s in a spindown state when it's not even doing anything, so i just use the power off just to be sure.spindown is good for saving on electricity bill, and MAY prolong life. I say MAY, because if you are spinning up the drives too often, it MAY instead be negatively affecting longevity i suspect. If you won't be triggering much spin up/downs on a highly frequent basis, it may be worth doing. did install 4 hdds into tr004 and setting up a raid5? and what is it's current setup like with the 2 existing hard drives on the tr-004?
