About this deal

Each year it is always exciting to see the list of new books released by well-known authors, let’s have a look at what 2023 holds. These fancy dress creations are so easy, they can even be thrown together in the morning before heading into school if necessary. It's just a question of figuring out what your child is interested in and working out which book character reflects that hobby or sport. If you have a fancy dress box – search for books that have a pirate, a princess, a super hero, a horse, a doctor, an astronaut or whatever outfit options you already have – you’ll find something that works! Roald Dahl penned the wonderful book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ in 1964 and it’s been captivating children ever since. Why not read the story (or parts of it) to the children. Follow on by playing ’The Chocolate Game’, for which you will need some dressing up items (hat, scarf, gloves, sunglasses, etc), dice, plate, knife and fork and of course some chocolate. All the children should sit in a circle with all the items in the middle, the children one at a time roll the dice (use large foam dice if you have one). If they get a six they get a chance to get some chocolate, but before trying to cut and eat the chocolate they have to put on all the items (e.g. hat, scarf, gloves, etc) and must use the knife and fork. Once the next person gets a 6 they go into the middle and have a chance. 4. Bring the Books to Life

I was captivated at the age of nine by the magical world of ‘Middle Earth’ and the journey of discovery of a young Bilbo Baggins. Tolkien painted such a real picture of a fantasy world which he was able to bring to life through enthralling story-telling.

5. Mr Men / Little Miss books – Roger Hargreaves

Ask the children to come along dressed up as their favourite book character to add to the spirit of the evening. Get the leaders involved too and create a real buzz in your Anchor Section. 5. Getting into the Bible: The Wordless Book Five stories and accompanying activities featuring some of the most popular Mr Men and Little Miss characters Undoubtedly my favourite book as a child was The Machine Gunners by Robert Westall. It was about a young boy living through WW2 who, on an adventure into the woods, found a downed German plane. He, along with his friends, took the weaponry from the plane and built a fortress along with a working gun! Later they’d shoot down a plane and capture the gunner! It was a fantastical tale, but it utterly captivated me. It spoke to my sense of adventure and a belief I could do anything I wanted. I remember shortly after reading this book, I decided I wanted to build a space shuttle. I never did build it, but I still dream!

A World Book Day costume classic! This quirky outfit just requires a stripy hat made from strong card, and some eyeliner whiskers. The big red bow is a fun touch and could be made from a red scarf, some old fabric or some red tissue paper. Jo – I vividly remember Josephine March and the imagery her character conjured up – with her poetry writing, her fear of the dentist’s chair, her relationship with her sisters, the sharing of the gloves and the party dress that was ruined by a burn and yet had to be worn!

Wayne Howden, Principal, The Aquila School The Mr Men Books by Adam Hargreaves and Roger Hargreaves Use bandages and matching tops and trousers to go as Mr Bump and Little Miss Sunshine (Image: Anna Ruffle) Use toy props and do their hair and make up I take from this that we may reach points where we think there is no way forward and things will not improve. Quite often as adults we can get caught in a rut, or the monotony of routine, that leaves us wanting. You won't have to go to Infinity or beyond to make your kid a great Buzz Lightyear costume this World Book Day, you just need this easy-to-follow guide! Top tips for making World Book Day costumes I loved The Shrinking of Treehorn because it taught me about the importance of making time for people and it also taught me how NOT to be a school Principal. It is World Book Day, and schools across the UAE will be teeming with mini BFGs, surprisingly convincing Harry Potters, and the least scary Gruffalos you ever did see. But, as adorable and impressive as the tome-themed costumes are, the true literary heroes that we celebrate today are books themselves.
