When we first encounter Edward, he is in the possession of a girl named Abilene. Abilene adores her china friend and he is treated like a prince, joining family meals and enjoying an extensive wardrobe. Soon Edward begins his journey, as he accompanies the family on The Queen Mary to travel to London. However, during the voyage, he falls overboard and plunges to the bottom of the ocean. From here he is rescued by a fisherman, who takes him home and provides him with a new name, a new identity and a new family. Thus begins a repeating pattern, where Edward is passed from owner to owner, fitting into each new home only to be torn from it to find another. When we meet Edward, he is the beloved friend of Abilene, a ten year old girl who dresses him in the finest clothes and treats him like the important rabbit that he knows he is. Abilene lives with her mother and her grandmother, Pellegrina, who speaks to Edward as if she knows what he is thinking. Edward is just fine with his living situation, but gets annoyed at Abilene’s gushing, and doesn’t understand this feeling of love. One day, however, when the family takes a trip on a cruise ship, Edward is taken by some mean boys and accidentally thrown overboard. This is a WONDERFUL, worthy read, the story will touch your heart, and the illustrations are lovely.I don’t question much of what Kate DiCamillo chooses to write about. Going with the flow has its rewards. I had my doubts whether our “five going on six” year old would have the same attitude, but she did.

Edward's journeys not only take him far from home, but even farther from the selfish rabbit he once was. Eventually, Edward is cruelly broken against a counter top edge, repaired and then offered for sale in a doll store for several years. This is the story of a china rabbit who learns the true meaning of love. I read this book out loud to my class and truly enjoyed the masterful way that Kate DiCamillo crafts a story. Her word choice and sentence fluency found its way into my writing lesson plans to illustrate some of the possibilities waiting to be found in words. Kate DiCamillo is also the author of The Tale of Despereaux, Because of Winn Dixie and over a dozen other books.The novel contains several themes involving loss and recovery, kindness and compassion, and the journey to self-discovery. The main theme can be summarized by a quote from the book: "If you have no intention of loving or being loved, then the whole journey is pointless." The reader travels with a china rabbit named Edward Tulane through, as the synopsis states, "the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the bedside of an ailing child to the bustling streets of Memphis". Edward, over the course of his adventures, learns what love is about, and as he fell in love with all his many owners, I fell in love with him and his story.
