About this deal

This means if there is a problem like scratches, embedded dust/dirt or discolouration it might be impossible to rectify without damaging the painting beneath. In the former case you have to be careful to prevent friction which leads to the formation of bubbles which can dry inside the varnish layer and are impossible to remove. In case the varnish needs to be removed from a painting, Golden Varnishes recommends applying an “isolation coat” of acrylic medium (I use golden gloss glazing medium) to separate the painting from the varnish.

Suitable for application over acrylic paints both interior and exterior, the coating will also protect against UV damage. Depending on your style and technique, there are a wide range of traditional oils, mediums, and solvents to help you control your colour as well as varnishes to protect your work and provide a final finish.

BUT if you make sure all doors and windows are closed - also have a bucket of steamy water in the studio to add humidity - and apply fairly speedily with a large flat soft watercolour brush - you'll get an excellent result. This one is easy to apply (make sure you don't overbrush) it dries to an even shine, and lifts the dark colours. The actual makeup of the varnish is what’s really important, not whether you spray- or brush-apply it (coat thickness will play a part too of course). I used to just use gloss medium as the varnish but was told that coating the surface of the painting with that was a bad idea since it can not be removed. Mediums and acrylic emulsion varnishes are virtually the same thing (from Liquitex exactly the same in some cases).

I have always applied a thin coat of medium as an isolation coat under whatever varnish I used since reading the advice many years ago, all the current advice seems to confirm it. It would have a noticeable yellow colour and may not bond satisfactorily to acrylic paint but these are reasonably flexible when young and are supposed to have good resistance to marring, far superior to any acrylic emulsion certainly. B]I used to just use gloss medium as the varnish but was told that coating the surface of the painting with that was a bad idea since it can not be removed. e. if you can leave it on the floor permanently) polyurethane is a definite possibility as that’s what is most frequently used on floors these days. This varnish is famous for its high gloss retention, long lasting properties, excellent outdoor durability, superior flowing characteristics and high build properties.Apply in thin layers with a good quality varnishing brush, allowing a minimum of 3 hours drying time between coats. When coating surfaces finished with a coloured varnish, a maximum of 5% of the coloured varnish can be added to the product if necessary. If necessary, apply a second coat of the product after drying and intermediate sanding (P 320 - 600).
