About this deal

I do this 6 days a week if I’m not teaching (I teach interior design twice a week in London during term time). To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Etta is an artist but after meeting the love of her life Carlo in the course of her work she elopes with him to Capri hiding the truth behind her sudden departure.

She does not intend to marry (in fact, nurses then were forbidden to marry) but to enjoy her nursing career and travel. Etta elopes to Capri with her Italian love, Carlo, but though her growing bump is real, her marriage certificate is a lie. We see through all their journeys, how the situations created by the war change their lives forever. The twins – Jessie and Etta – are a few years younger than Celie, but both have passions that define them. I really, really enjoyed this book and felt quite sad when I reached its end and am looking forward to the next book featuring this family. Her first, The Lost Letter, totally escaped my radar – her second, The English Wife, most certainly didn’t (it was impossible not to notice the wonderful reviews), but I just couldn’t fit it into my reading list.

Etta elopes with her Italian lover to Capri, but although her baby bump is for real, her marriage is not.I was standing on platform 13 at Clapham Junction on a Friday afternoon in May, just before a Bank Holiday weekend, having taught that week. On advice of a writing friend I’d met on Richard Skinner’s course, who had gone on to have several psychological thrillers published by Avon, I submitted my novel to Avon directly rather than try to find an agent. Adrienne Chinn was born in an old paper-making town in Newfoundland, and grew up in rural Quebec and Montreal. Overall I enjoyed this book, I got pulled into the lives of the Fry family, I liked how we followed different characters in different locations. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end.

Adrienne Chinn’s Love in a Time of War is a wonderful historical novel that effortlessly draws readers into a beautifully evoked world of secrets, jeopardy, hope and love. Although the First World War provides the backdrop to many of the events in the book and transports the reader to a number of locations including Italy and Egypt, another constant element is the campaign for women’s suffrage. Love in a Time of War” by Adrienne Chinn, new author to this reader was a captivating and wonderful read. The book is set in 1913, the author gets it absolutely spot on with the descriptions of the characters and the setting , when reading it you can clearly picture the type of places they are in . Amongst these were photographs of my great-aunts Jessie and Ettie Chinn — Jessie who became a milliner was creative and engaged to a young German student who was killed during the war; Ettie joined the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Nursing Service and served on a hospital ship at Gallipoli and in Egypt during the war.I thought all of their stories were worthy of exploring, as they really show how women’s lives were so greatly affected by the war. She retraced her English father’s footsteps back to England, where she now lives and works as an interior designer. This fabulous read introduces the Fry sisters Cecelia and twins Jessie and Etta and the very different paths they take following the outbreak of world war 1. When not writing or designing, she can normally be found in the queue at Gatwick heading off somewhere new: she travels all over the world, but most often to her beloved Morocco, which she has been visiting regularly for over ten years. Love In A Time Of War follows the three Fry sisters through the long war years, it was a time of great change, young women left home for the first time, traveled overseas unchaperoned, employed in jobs that men traditionally did and many decided they were no longer happy working as domestics. Jessie is the most serious of the sisters, determined to put her nursing skills to use and resist the pressure to follow the conventional path of marriage and motherhood. A sweeping emotional roller-coaster from a master storyteller, Love in a Time of War is a compulsively readable historical novel from Adrienne Chinn. Her second novel, The English Wife -- a timeslip story set in World War II England and contemporary Newfoundland -- was published in June 2020 and has become an international bestseller. If you like slow moving long historical fiction novels with zero closure then this is the perfect book for you 😂😂😂.While Jessie might have chosen a caring profession, she does it more out of ambition to see the world and not be confined to the role of the obedient wife and mother of the family. It was long at almost 500 pages and at times it went slow but I was seeing the characters develop more and that worked for me.
