Parteger, Edith (1989) [1972]. A Blood Field by Shrewsbury. Headline Book Publishing. ISBN 0747233667. So who’s the Owain Glyndŵr I know? Owain Glyndŵr descended from the Princes of Powys and acted as a leader in the Welsh revolt against the harsh English rule. On September 16 th, 1400, over 300 of Glyndŵr’s supporters met at Glyndyfrdwy to proclaim him Prince of Wales, a title still recognised across Wales. The position of Prince of Wales was currently held by the English, having been seized from Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, in 1282. The Welsh believed that their prince should, rightfully, be Welsh, so they chose Owain Glyndŵr as the man to take the crown. Owain Glyndŵr’s title was never recognised by the English, though, and still to this day he is erased in British history. In a recent parliamentary debate one MP called his parliament “a myth”, which may be true if you think in terms of the “official” English parliament. But with that refusal to recognise Owain Glyndŵr, the English are also denying the Welsh any recognition in this history of which we are such a large part. In 1923, a 2-6-2T Vale of Rheidol locomotive was named after Glyndŵr. The locomotive is still operational and was one of a few used by British Rail until it was privatised. [98]

A grandchild of the Scudamores was Sir John Donne of Kidwelly, a successful Yorkist courtier, diplomat and soldier, who after 1485 made an accommodation with his fellow Welshman, Henry VII. Through the Donne family, many prominent English families are descended from Owain, including the House of de Vere, successive holders of the title Earl of Oxford, and the Cavendish family ( Dukes of Devonshire). R. R. Davies noted that certain internal features underscore the roots of Glyndŵr's political philosophy in Welsh mythology: in it, the three men invoke prophecy, and the boundaries of Wales are defined according to Merlinic literature. Owain Glyndŵr was a descendant of the Princes of Powys through his father Gruffudd Fychan II. Through his mother, Elen ferch Tomas ap Llywelyn, he was a descendant of the Princes of Deheubarth, also a descendant of Llywelyn the Great of the House of Aberffraw. [2]
